3DA, SWAZILAND (Update)
Operators Phil/G3SWH and John/G3OLU (aka EA5ARC) will be active as 3DA0PW from the Hawane Resort in western Swaziland between February 21-29th. The Hawane Resort has a well equipped station with Elecraft K3 transceivers, ICOM IC2KL amplifiers, an A4S at 24m and an A3WS at 20m, a wire 4 square for 40m and a vertical for 80m complete with 30 x 20m long radials. Activity will be on CW only on all bands 80-10 meters. There will be no 160, 6 meters or EME activity. Propagation permitting, they plan to have two stations on the air for as many hours every day as is possible. Their main objective is to work as many European, North American and ROTW stations on as many different bands as possible and plan to make at least 15,000 QSOs. QSL via G3SWH, either via the OQRS facility on Phil's Web site (preferred), direct with SAE and adequate return postage, or via the Bureau. Subject to a good Internet connection, there will be an on-line log on Phil's Web site and daily uploads to LoTW. The 3DA0PW Web site is now up and running at:

http://www.g3swh.org.uk/3da0pw.html

2) A35A (A35RK) is packing up to leave Tonga very soon. A final depar- ture date is set for 16th January 2012, and there is no definite return date. Paul states, "I will be taking down antennas and packing radios for shipment to the States in 2 days (December 31st)." His last date of activity was December 30th. A35RK/A35A has been active from Tonga since 4th May 1994, but that is about to end for an indefinite period of time. Any lingering QSLs are good via LoTW or W7TSQ.

ARRL DXCC DIAMOND AWARD
During the year 2012, the ARRL's DXCC Award program will be celebrating their 75th anniversary, and as you know this is the world's preeminent DXing award. So reaching this "Diamond milestone", the ARRL decided to celebrate this event by going back to the roots of the award, and specifically reading the 1937 DXCC List (January 1937 QST, pages 52-53) to learn what countries were counted at the onset which led them to create the "Diamond DXCC Challenge". The country list that they will be using for the "Diamond DXCC Challenge" is based upon the list of 231 places shown in 1937. The list is available at:

http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Diamond%20DXCC/QST_Jan_1937_p52-53.pdf
The League has added some interesting twists to this award (ex. where working one country may count for two entities!). The "Diamond DXCC Challenge" is an "Honor Award" and will not require acquisition or inspection of QSLs or proof of confirmation. The Diamond DXCC certificate will be available for working 100 of the 226 entities and will be endorsable at 5 levels: 125, 150, 175, 200, and 225. If anyone works all 226, there will be a special award for that remarkable achievement! There will also be awards for the top finishers. For complete details and picture of the award, go to:

CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Postponed!)
The latest update, dated December 30th, states (edited): "Hi Everyone - Unfortunately, we had to postpone the Sable Island CY0 DXpedition due to the landing area on the island being under water. A winter storm with 20+ foot swells pushed water onto the sand 'runway' on Wednesday evening. Al Wilson, the OIC on Sable, made an assessment of the landing area yesterday. Ron and I talked with Al and there was no possibility of a flight to the island in the next five days. After that, it would depend on how quickly the water would drain from the landing area and if any other storms affect the island. At that point, we decided to postpone the DXpedition.

Needless to say, we are extremely disappointed that we have had to postpone the DXpedition. We have learned first-hand there is really no season of the year that is ideal for flights. Late yesterday morning we met with Ted of Maritime Air. Ted advised it has been the worst year he has experienced as far as scheduling flights. Maritime Air provides logistical flight services to Environment Canada on the island.

Even though we are disappointed, we are not defeated. Maritime Air allowed us to store our gear to help facilitate our next attempt. We are discussing two options with the Sable Island station.

We appreciate your interest in the DXpedition. We have received a lot of encouragement from DX'ers around the world. Continue to check the DXpedition Web site for updates at:

NCDXF CHRISTMAS GIFT
Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, NCDXF Vice President, informed OPDX on December 25th (edited): "Today, the Northern California DX Foundation announced a 'Christmas gift' of 500 USDs to help rebuild and re-equip the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand's (RAST) HS0AC Club station that was destroyed by recent flooding.

By now, you may have heard about the severe floods in Thailand this past fall, resulting in devastating damage everywhere -- including the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand (RAST) and their famous 'HS0AC' club station which were completely destroyed. This website shows it all in horrific detail:

http://www.qsl.net/rast
RAST is also part of the Asian Technical Institute. The HS0AC club station is located within the Institute. http://www.ait.ac.th Please help Thailand hams by donating any amount via PayPal at donate@rast.or.th during this season of giving. All donations will go entirely to rebuilding the station.

For the past 40 years, NCDXF had not only been funding major DXpeditions, but is also committed to education and scholarships.
Merry Christmas to all and Healthy New Year filled with DX!!!"
