CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Reminder/Update)
PRESS RELEASE - date October 20th
[edited]:
"Murray/WA4DAN and Ron/AA4VK announce that everything is set for their operation from Sable Island beginning October 22-31st. The weather forecast for Monday looks good, at this time. The only concern is the beach conditions. Rain is forecast for Sunday which could potentially affect the 'beach runway'. Travel to Sable Island is always problematic. Often, when conditions in Halifax are good, conditions at Sable Island are not good and visa versa. Also, the 'old' Britten-Norman Islander aircraft is not equipped with modern instrumentation, which limits the conditions under which it is safe to fly between the mainland of Nova Scotia and Sable Island. We were unsuccessful in two previous attempts to visit Sable Island. We are optimistic that Monday will be a 'GO'.DXPEDITION VIDEOS OF THE WEEKAs previously advertised, our focus will be on 10, 12, and 15 meters, where the demand for CY0 is greatest, and especially on 10M, where new DX'ers, with modest stations, have the best opportunity to work 'a new one'. Also, we plan to be active in the upcoming CQWW Phone contest on 10, 15, 20, and 40 meters to provide CY0.
We would like to thank Gerry Forbes, Officer-in-Charge for Sable Island for being so helpful in trying to make this, our third attempt, successful. In addition, we would like to express our appreciation to Gary, VE1RGB, who has provided invaluable logistical support in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the departure point for the flight to Sable Island.
Monitor www.cy0dxpedition.com for the latest updates."

UK TO PHASE OUT IRCS. Phil, G3SWH, received the following info from the Royal Mail:
"Due to declining international mail volumes and electronic substitution, customer demand for International Reply Coupons has been falling dramatically over the last few years. Overall sales of Inter- national Reply Coupons have been very low indeed - on average just 4 per annum bought from each Post Office branch. Therefore, it was no longer commercially viable to maintain the sale of coupons and Royal Mail has taken the decision to withdraw them from sale.International Reply Coupons have not been withdrawn globally from sale. Under UPU regulations Royal Mail through Post Office Counters is obliged to redeem International Reply Coupons presented having been purchased overseas, but we are not obliged to sell them. However, I can confirm that customers have up to December 2013 to redeem IRCs."
Phil states, "This seems to be much more in line with the Royal Mail's responsibilities under their UPU membership. Looks like they're safe until 31st December 2013. It may be that the UPU will change their rules after that date (which would be no bad thing IMHO)."

In addition to the radio operations, the team will carry out numerous scientific projects of environmental science, especially involving studying invasive and undiscovered species that have potential for catastrophic disruption of the Clipperton ecosystem. The team will study vortex winds produced by the island, and will document foraging by congenitally deformed birds. Advisor Robert Pitman reports that a significant portion of the masked boobies are deformed and apparently are fed by their parents their entire lives.
The DXpedition is very pleased to acknowledge a personal gift from a world-famous ham of 10,000 USDs. While preferring to remain anonymous, the donor hopes that his gift will stimulate others to support the project. A particularly interesting activity will be the real-time Internet video connection with students. After the expedition the students will write essays for a compendium to be titled 'Saving the World, by We the Students.' The publication is designed to be the first of a series of 'Saving the World, by...' The team also will collect and remove plastic debris from the island. You can help in these efforts by making a donation through the link on the Web site.
Complete information about the project is available on the Web site at www.cordell.org/CI. The project is being organized and will be led by: Bob KK6EK schmieder (a) cordell.org Chris DL1MGB Chris (a)DL1MGB.com "
Operator Yuri, VE3DZ, will once again be active as VE2IM from Sept-Iles, QC (Zone 2), during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 27-28th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/High-Power or Low-Power entry. Yuri states that he will be there between October 23-30th. This is his 17th trip to Zone 2 since 1999. Activity before and after the contest will be on CW, SSB and RTTY, and all HF bands including the 30/17/12 meter bands. QSL via VE3DZ, direct, by the Bureau or LoTW.VK0H, HEARD ISLAND (Update)
A recent update, dated October 15th, was posted on the Heard Island (The 2014 Cordell Expedition) Web page at:http://www.cordell.org/HD Under "News" it states [edited]:"We have posted updates of the Project Description (version 5.2)VP2M, MONTSERRAT (Update)http://www.cordell.org/HD/HD_pages/HD_Documents.html and the TEAM.We are pleased to welcome Steve Chamberlian/VK6IR and William (Wild Bill) Beyer/N2WB to the radio team. We also welcome several other persons to the offsite team, including Yasuo "Zorro" Miyazawa/JH1AJT, Tommy Horozakis/VK2IR, and Christopher Wells/N9LXR. Wells is implementing a real-time interactive video capability for the Clipperton Expedition (see below), and will do the same for Heard Island.
We are also pleased to welcome Dr. Robert Pitman, NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California. Pitman is a world expert on killer whales. Killer whales are arguably one of the most recognizable, and best- studied, large animals on earth, yet basic questions about how many species there are and how they function within the ecosystem remain unanswered. Pitman has assembled evidence for the existence of a new species of killer whale in Antarctic waters, in the area that the Heard Island expedition will be travelling. Pitman will be on the Heard Island cruise to search confirm the proposed new whale species. Confirming new species in Antarctic waters would highlight the fact that our knowledge of marine biodiversity is perhaps even more rudimentary than currently recognized.
Please note the connection between the 2014 Heard Island Project and the 2013 Clipperton Expedition www.cordell.org/CI. Some of the same team members will be implementing some of the same science projects on Clipper- ton that we expect to carry out at Heard Island. While being a major expedition on its own, Clipperton is also a development and test project for Heard Island. Because of this close relationship, we hope that sponsors will support both projects."
Operators (YL) Babs/DL7AFS and Lot/DJ7ZG will once again be on another DXpedition. This time they will be active as VP2MYL and VP2MGZ, respectively, from Montserrat (NA-103, WLOTA 1475) between November 5-20th.
