2013 AFD
In celebration of the 63rd anniversary of Armed Forces Day (AFD), the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are co-sponsoring the annual Military/Amateur Radio Crossband Communications Test. Although Armed Forces Day is traditionally celebrated on the third Saturday in May -- May 18th -- the AFD Military/Amateur Crossband Communications Test will be conducted on May 11th to prevent conflict with the Dayton Hamvention, scheduled for May 17-19th.

The annual celebration features traditional military-to-amateur crossband communications SSB voice and Morse code tests. These tests give Amateur Radio operators and short wave listeners an opportunity to demonstrate their individual technical skills and to receive recognition from the appropriate military radio station for their proven expertise. QSL cards will be provided to stations making contact with the military stations. Military-to-amateur crossband operations will take place on the dates and time in UTC on the frequencies listed for the Army, Air Force and Navy/Marine Corps and Coast Guard MARS stations. Voice contacts will include operations in single sideband voice (SSB); some stations will use CW to provide the opportunity to check in by Morse code.

Depending on propagation and staffing, some stations may not operate the entire period. Participating military stations will transmit on selected military MARS frequencies and listen for Amateur Radio stations in the amateur bands. The military station operator will announce the specific amateur band frequency being monitored. Duration of each voice contact should be limited to 1-2 minutes. The annual Secretary of Defense message will be transmitted via digital modes, including RTTY, PACTOR, AMTOR, PSK-31, MFSK and MT63 from certain stations. Check the MARS Armed Forces Crossband Test website for schedules and frequencies of participating military stations, including a list of stations that will be transmitting the annual Secretary of Defense message at:

http://www.usarmymars.org/home/announcements
Instructions on how to copy and submit the message are also included.

3D2, FIJI
Laci, HA0NAR, will be active as 3D2AR from Viti Levu Island (OC-016, WLOTA 0055), in the Fiji Island group, sometime in October. Activity will probably be on all HF bands, 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via his home callsign. For updates, watch:

4J, AZERBAIJAN (Special Event)
Look for special event callsigns 4J20RO and 4K20RO to be active until the end of the year. Operations seems to be mainly CW so far on 30-10 meters. Activity is to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the "Russian Centre of Science and Culture" in Baku. QSL via 4J6RO.

Members of the "Safari DX-Activators Club" are planning to conduct a DXpedition to the Pirgulu Natural Reserve (WFF reference 4JFF-012, coordinates - 40°47'14"N / 48°34'43"E) between May 9-10th. This will be a first time activation (i.e. "new one"). Activity will be on 40-20 meters; possibly other bands - depending on local and propagation conditions. Two callsigns will be used for this operation:
4J0SFR - CW mostly (QSL via 4J5T)
4K6AE - PSK31 and RTTY mostly
Updated QSL info will be posted on QRZ.com.

FT5Z, AMSTERDAM ISLAND (Press Release)
The following press release was sent out by Ralph Fedor, K0IR, team leader of the January 2014 Amsterdam Island (FT5ZM) DXpedition, on May 3rd [edited]:

"Since our last Press release early last month, we have a great deal of news to report. We have received the callsign FT5ZM. It is a good callsign and we thank the TAAF for their cooperation. Two new team members have joined the team of fourteen. They are Neil, VA7DX and Andy, UA3AB. Both men are veterans of many DXpedtions and add expertise to the list of operators.

Several more sponsors have joined in with their support, Spiderbeam, Cycle 24 Antennas, and Array Solutions. Array Solutions will be providing the new OM Power amplifiers for our low band operations.

The team will assemble in Perth, Australia, on January 10/11, 2014. The DXpedition vessel Braveheart will arrive on January 12th, and loading of equipment and personal items will begin. The North Coast Radio Group of Western Australia, along with Alek, VK6APK, will be offering logistical support to the FT5ZM Amsterdam Island DXpedition Team. The VK6's will assist in obtaining masts, ground rods, electrical hardware, and some medical supplies. This will result in a substantial decrease in the bulk and weight of material that the team has to ship from the U.S. We plan to depart for the 9 day trip to Amsterdam Island on January 15th.

We are grateful to the growing list of DX Foundations, DX Clubs and individual DXers who have contributed toward the DXpeditions expenses. NCDXF, INDEXA, ARRL/Colvin and several European based DX Foundations have made unusually large commitments. They are aware of the extreme cost of the venture at over 400,000 USDs. (see our budget on the website.)

However, thus far, we have only raised just over 53% of the money that we need to complete this DXpedition. As payments on the vessel begin next month, we must ask the world-wide DX community for their support. Visit our website at:

www.amsterdamdx.org
and contribute whatever you can. We need your help.

Thanks... we will update you monthly until departure."

KH9, WAKE ISLAND (Press Release)
Joe, W8GEX, sent out the following press release on May 5th [edited]:
"Press Release #3 - Wake Atoll Commemorative DXpedition -- The Wake Atoll commemorative team's operation at the beginning of October, 2013 is progressing nicely.

The initial phase of the operation, planning, is essentially complete and the Team has moved into equipment procurement and staging operations. The equipment will be pre-staged in California and Hawaii prior to trans- port to Wake. Staging, pre-testing, packing, and shipping under the direction of Tom, ND2T, and Kimo, KH6U, are major undertakings for DX- peditions and are essential to assure equipment arriving on-time and safely on Wake.

Our support Team has been expanded to include these additional Pilot Stations: Hiroo, JA1WSX (Japan/Asia); Stan, KH6CG (Oceania) and Rich, KY6R (USA). Additionally, Val, NV9L, has agreed to be the chief pilot for the operation. As mentioned in the previous release, this support Team is an essential part of the DXpedition's operation. The information they gather from the DX communities' feedback during the event, allows the 'on island team' to adjust their activities to meet changing band conditions and optimize QSOs worldwide.

Stu, K6TU, will be developing in-depth propagation summaries which will be posted on our website and Don, N1DG, has been guiding the team on Logistical issues.

The Team wants to thank the DX Community, including generous worldwide Foundations and Clubs, equipment manufacturers and outlets for their outstanding support of the Wake Commemorative efforts. These DXpeditions are extremely expensive and could not be accomplished without the support of the entire DX Community. Please visit the

wake2013.org
website to view our Sponsors and make your personal donation.

Please check our website often for updates.

XR0, JUAN FERNANDEZ (Update/Press Release) [edited]

"After many months of careful planning, the XR0ZR team is pleased and proud to announce prepar- ations for a multi-national Dxpedition to Robinson Crusoe Island in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago (CE0Z), using the callsign XR0ZR. It is our privilege to activate this entity during the period November 820th, 2013.

The Juan Fernández Islands (Spanish: Archipiélago Juan Fernández) are a sparsely inhabited island group reliant on tourism and fishing in the South Pacific Ocean, situated about 600 kilometers off the coast of Chile, and is composed of three main volcanic islands; Robinson Crusoe Island, Alejandro Selkirk Island and Santa Clara Island.

On the Club-Log's most wanted DXCC list, Juan Fernandez, CE0Z ranks as #35 on the most wanted list for all amateur radio operators, #23 on the most wanted list for Asia, #27 on the most needed list for CW operations, and #18 on the most needed list for Digital Operations.

The Team is meeting in Santiago, Chile, and will depart by a chartered aircraft on November 7th. The Team expects become active on November 8th.

The main goals of this DXpedition are to work every amateur radio operator who needs Juan Fernandez, (CE0Z) for a new DXCC country. In addition, we will be active on all bands and modes from 1.8 MHz to 50 MHz with special attention to be made to accommodate distant stations during periods when propagation permits. We are planning to have 4 stations running simulta- neously and hope to make thousand contacts worldwide.

We are kindly seeking Club and Individual Sponsors to help us defray the costs of carrying out this important Dxpedition.

Our team will consist of the following Operators: Fabri-IW3SQY (Team Leader), Franco-IZ8GCE, Paolo-IV3DSH, Josep-EA3AKY, Les-SP3DOI, Dino-CE3PG, and Art-WA7NB.

We wish everyone good propagation and we hope that you enjoy working the XR0ZR Team.

Thank you for your assistance in helping make this a world class DXpedition. You can follow us on:
