VQ9/VQ93, CHAGOS (Reminder/Update)
Just a reminder that Jim, ND9M/VQ9JC, will once again be active with a special prefix, this time as VQ93JC from Diego Garcia between June 22nd and July 7th. He usually activates an unique/special prefix each year (last year it was VQ92JC). Jim informs OPDX on his current operating conditions:

"The rig (FT-857D) that I use normally for working from the island crapped out on me about half way through the VQ975FOC operation. I thought I was done for until I remembered that I'd rescued an Icom IC-760 from the ham shack when the Navy shut it down.

The IC-760 had been donated by a former VQ9 years ago and did not belong to the Navy, so I snagged it. But there was no way I was going to lug that thing back and forth to the island every day just for a little operating, so I set up on the ship and operated from the Lagoon. I was still using dipoles, but now they were 110 feet above the waterline (and 40,000 tons of metal!) instead of just 30 feet above the ground.

Better still, the IC-760 and dipoles kept me on the air for the duration of the celebration. Overall, I made 3400 contacts as VQ975FOC. The first 1200 QSOs were from the island; the other 2200 on the ship. Of course, the QSOs made from the ship will not count for DXCC, and my QSL will be marked accordingly, but the spirit of this particular special callsign was to get the FOC callsign 'out there' to give extra points toward the FOC75 award which does not require contacts to be made with land-based stations.

When my FT-857D died, my XYL Cori (KK4CGA) shipped out my back up rig, a Yaesu FT-897D, it didn't arrive until after the special callsign expired, but it's here now, and I'm active from the island again. I'm still getting my radio teeth kicked in since I'm running barefoot into a low dipole, but VQ9 is back on the air! I'll continue operating from the ship and may put up a 6M dipole to use with my FT-857D for a beacon. I'll be here until about July 10th, which would bring me back in mid November."

Just a reminder, when Jim states he is still operating, it is Field Day style from a recreational park using 100 watts to a dipole at a height of 10 meters because the VQ9 club station has been shut down. Jim reports that he has to set up the station each time and then break it down each day which further limits his operating time typically to 1230-1615z on most days. Sometimes he is on Fridays starting as early as 0830Z. QSL via ND9M.

YN, NICARAGUA
