2013 SINGLE-OP CASS AWARD (Press Release)[edited]
Peri Monioudis has won
the 2013 Single-Operator Cass Award. -- The Cass Award encourages DXpedition
operating excellence. While QRV from the Palestine as E44PM in August 2013,
Peri worked 6696 unique stations over his 9-day DXpedition, demonstrating
an outstanding effort to log as many individuals as possible and setting
a new Single-Operator Cass Award record. Swiss DX Foundation President
Stephan, HB9DDO, presented Peri with his plaque and prize at the group's
annual meeting on March 8, 2014.
About The Cass Award -- Presented annually, the Cass Award encourages DXpeditions to maximize the number of DXers worked with a 1000 USDs prize for the Single-Operator DXpedition that works the most unique callsigns over a two-week interval. This award honors the wisdom and spirit of Cass, WA6AUD (SK), whose stories in the West Coast DX Bulletin taught a generation of DXers that DX IS!

3C4, EQUATORIAL GUINEA (Update)
According to "The Daily DX", Elmo, EA5BYP,
did not make it to Bioko Island (AF-010) this past weekend "due to some
circumstances (Tired, food, financial issues)".
5V, TOGO
The Czech DXpedition team has organized another expedition,
this time to TOGO. Preliminary dates are thd end of September, approx-
imately for 10 days. Operators mentioned (w/callsigns) are David/OK6DJ
(5V7DB), Pavel/OK1FPS (5V7PS) and Petr/OK1FCJ (5V7ST). Activity will be
on 160-10 meters using 2 x K3, 1xKX3 and 2x PA into 2 x Spiderbeam
(w/WARC), 1 x vertical (40-10m), 1 vertical (160/80m) and special RX
antennas for the low bands. Operations will be on CW, SSB and the Digital
modes. They plan to be in the CQWW DX RTTY Contest (September 27-28th).

7Q, MALAWI
Another interesting and unusual callsign has been announced
from this DXCC entity. Dr. Remco, PA3FYM, has announced that he plans a
DXpedition to Malawi and will be active as 7QNL (yes, that is the callsign)
for 3 weeks in May and June. Remco received his license on February 11th.
Remco informs OPDX that the activity will be from around May 18th, until
June 10th. He will likely be in Malawi during the Presidential Elections,
and plans to participate in the CQ WPX CW Contest (May 24-25th) with his
special callsign (a prefix itself!; cf. 2014 CQ WPX rules) as a Single-Op
entry. His planned activity will be on 80/40/30/20/17/15/12/10 meters
using CW and SSB. Four Beverages are foreseen to try to optimize reception
on the lower bands. Remco's efforts/DXpedition will include charity for
a local project in the Blantyre area. His QSL Manager is PA1AW. More

A5, BHUTAN
Ryo, JH3AEF, will once again be active as A52EQW from Dochula
Resort at the end of August and/or early September. He mentions that he
will be there with his friends who are probably Junichi/JH3AEF (A52AEF)
and Jusei/JA3IVU (A52IVU). Look for more details to be forthcoming. QSL

CT8/CR2, AZORES
Kim, OH6KZP, will be active as CR2X from Ribeira Grande,
the second largest city in the Azores and located on the north coast of Sao
Miguel Island, during the CQWW WPX SSB Contest (March 29-30th) as a Single-

FR, REUNION ISLAND (Reminder)
Guy, F5MNW, will once again be active as
FR/F5MNW from Saint Leu between March 16th and April 8th. Activity will

HK0/A, SAN ANDRES AND PROVIDENCIA
World Traveler Vlad, UA4WHX, has been
active as HK0/UA4WHX from Providencia Island (NA-049) as of March 12th.
As always, his length of stay unknown. Activity has been on 80-10 meters

HP, PANAMA (Reminder/IOTA Op)
Operators Simone/IK5RUN and Danio/I5OYY,
who arrived in Panama on March 14th, and will depart on April 2nd, will
live aboard and sail the Caribbean Sea on the Catamaran "Cush". They plan
to activate two Panamanian islands (possibly more). Simone informs OPDX
that they will be active as HP2/IK5RUN and HP2/I5OYY from the San Blas
Province IOTA Group (NA-170, San Blas Archipelago) and the Colon-Veraguas
North Province IOTA Group (NA-202). The skipper of the "Cush" is also a
ham radio operator (Claudio, IZ5VTC), but is not interested in operating.
Activity will be holiday style on 80-6 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital
modes. They will use a TS-480 with 200w and an IC-7000 with an amp into
vertical and wire antennas. They will also have a little yagi for 6m.

II7, ITALY (Special Event)
Members of the Associazione Radioamatori
Marinai Italiani -- Italian Amateur Radio Association Section of Taranto
(IQ7UJ), Italian Sailors and Navy announced that an exclusive amateur
radio will be on board Naval Unit of the Navy Luigi Durand de la Penne
between March 22-23rd, using the special callsign II7LDP/MM (ARMI-1111).
Activity is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Admiral
Luigi Durand de la Penne, decorated with the Gold Medal for Military
Valour for heroic action taken December 19, 1941, during the Company
of Alexandria, one of the most important in the history ship. Operators
mentioned are Frank/IZ7AUH, Fabrizio/IZ7LDC, Antonio/IK7WDS, Simplicio/

IOTA NEWS
AS-089. A group of Russian operators using snowmobiles will activate
Litke Island in the Arctic as RT9K/P starting March 18th.
Operators mentioned are Victor/RW0BG, Andrey/UA0BA, Igor/UA9KDF,
Alex/UA9KFX, and members of the RT9K Club Station Yang-Inform
Ltd. (Andrew, Daniel and Alexander). Activity will be on 80-10

AS-101. French operator, David, has been operating as HS0ZLU from Koh Phangan Island, in Thailand. He will be active until May 2014. Activity will be mainly on the 10 and 20 meters bands, but he will also be on 80/40/17/12m, and use SSB and PSK. He uses an Icom IC-706 MKIIG into a long wire of 10 meters in length (Diamond W8010 20-10m) and a long wire of 20 meters in length (for 80-40m). QSL via the address on QRZ.com. NO Bureau QSLs. AS-132. Operator Vlad/R3HD and Slava/UA3DK are now active as 3W1D and 3W4DK, respectively, from Cat Ba Island (WFF 3WFF-007) until March 19th (or possibly the end of March). Activity will be on 60-10 meters with the possibility of 80m and 160m. As this was being written, their activity was on 40 and 30 meters. QSL 3W1D via SP5PB. QSL 3W4DK via UA3DK.
EU-010. Camb-Hams will be active as GS3PYE/P from the Isle of Lewis between April 26th and May 3rd. The Camb-Hams have been act- ivating the Scottish Isles each year since 2008 and will be traveling to the Isle of Lewis in the Scottish Outer Hebrides in 2014. Thirteen operators will be active on all bands and many modes from 4m to 80m, 2m and 70cm for Satellites, and 2m and 23cm for EME. The HF bands will be covered by five simultaneous stations, while the 6m and 4m stations will have a great take-off towards the UK and Europe from the island's northern tip in IO68 square. 2m and 23cm EME will be available with a portable low-ERP Yagi system, mainly focused on JT modes. 2m and 70cm will be available for portable satellite operations.
Contest operations will take place in the RSGB 70MHz UKAC on April 29th. The group will be active on the major social net- works before, during and after the trip. Previous trips have generated some great audio and video recordings of the GS3PYE/P signal from around the world. EU-038. Operators Randy/PH4X, Ron/PA4RVS, Lucas/PD0LVS, Friso/PD1JFB and Marcel/PD3MVB will be active as PA6TX from Texel Island (WLOTA 0043) during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 26-27th). EU-141. (Special Prefix) Hans, LA2MOA, will be active as LI2MOA from Vardo Island during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 26-27th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power entry. QSL via LA2MOA, direct or by the Bureau. Also LoTW. This special prefix/callsign is being used to celebrate the 200 year anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution. The prefix will be active until December 31st. This callsign will be used primarily in contests.

Aland Island was active during the
Russian DX Contest this past weekend. Martti, OH2BH, sent out the following

"The callsign OH0W is a symbol of national bonding among Finnish contesters in 1982 when fifty of them spearheaded their Northern country in scoring a team contesting multi-multi category world win in the CQWW DX Contest. In the same spirit, the Team Finland, OH2UA and OH6KZP are busy in lining up their equipment for the upcoming WRTC-2014 in Boston. On March 11th, the following was posted:
"During the period of time that the VK9MT Team will be traveling both to and from Mellish Reef, and while involved in radio operations upon the reef, there will be no communications with the Team except via the estab- lished pilot network. All comment sections on Facebook, and our webpage, will be turned off. The auto publish function of the Guestbook entries will also be deactivated temporarily.Also, on March 14th, the following press release (Update #1) was sent out by Gene, K5GS:Should there be any comments or suggestions one wishes to send to the Team, please direct those comments to the appropriate Pilot for your geo- graphical area.

from Bermuda (NA-005) between March 29th and April 1st. His main activity

W8, UNITED STATES (U of A ARC [W8UPD] to launch High Alt. Balloon)
The
University of Akron ARC plans to launch a high altitude balloon (UA-HABP2),
with a repeater on Saturday, April 12th, at around 11:00 am EDT. Payload
includes a cross band repeater, slow scan television, and telemetry. The
repeater will have a coverage area exceeding 200 miles for a majority of
the two to four hour flight, reaching a maximum altitude projected to be
80,000 feet. Everyone is encouraged to join in! A hand held is all that
is needed to receive the balloon, dual band capability allows repeater
use if desired. Launch location subject to change closer to launch date.

XT, BURKINA FASO
Operators Jusei/JA3IVU, Yukinori/JA3VWT and Junichi/
JH3AEF will once again be active as XT2IVU, XT2VWT and XT2AEF, respectively,
from Ouagadougou between March 21-26th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters
using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. QSL via their home callsigns, direct
(see QRZ.com) or by the Bureau.
XZ, MYANMAR
Zorro, JH1AJT, will once again be in Myanmar on a Founda-
tion for Global Children (FGC) mission between March 14-21st. He will
activate XZ1Z again from Nay Pyi Taw starting Sunday, March 16th, during
his spare time. Activity would probably be on high bands. QSL via JH1AJT.
The 2013 XZ1J QSL cards are on the way to FGC HQ from their printing shop.
They will start answering OQRS and SASEs as soon as they arrive. For

YB9, INDONESIA (IPA & IOTA Op)
Gabor, HA3JB, will be on another Inter-
national Police Association and IOTA expedition to Indonesia between
September 22nd and October 2nd. Using the callsign YB9/HA3JB, he plans
to activate Lombok Island (OC-150) and Bali Island (OC-022). Activity
will be on the HF bands using CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via HA3JB (see details

uploaded to ClubLog. QSL cards will be valid for all IPA Award, including

ZF2, CAYMAN ISLANDS (Reminder)
Hugh, W4VAB, will be active as ZF2MT from
the Grand Cayman Island (NA-016) between now and March 22nd. Hugh informs
OPDX that this will not be a very big operation and will be a family trip.
Activity will be on the HF bands using a KX3, Ten-Tec model 418 with a 100
watt amp, and a Buddipole. He expects to make a few CW and PSK31 contacts.

ZL7, CHATHAM ISLAND (Reminder)
An international team will be going to
Chatham Island as ZL7AAA between March 20th and April 1st. Operators
mentioned are Franz/OE2SNL, Sandro/VE7NY, Graham/ZL1GMB and Barry/ZS1FJ.
Activity will be on all HF bands, 80-10 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY and
PSK31. QSL are via VE7NY. An OQRS will be available via ClubLog. The

ZS8, MARION ISLAND
Several sources are reporting that Gerard, ZS1KX,
will be leaving South Africa on April 2nd for Marion Island. He has
applied/requested the callsign ZS8KX. Gerard is expected to be active
from the island in May. His wife will handle the QSLs. QSL direct to:

ADDED NOTE: YL operator Nadia, ZS8A, has been showing up on 28650 kHz
this past week between 1420-1600z. She does use ClubLog.
