3B8, MAURITIUS. Hans, PA3HGT, will be active as 3B8/PA3HGT from Mauritius
(AF-049) between September 5-22nd. Activity will be holiday style on
40/20/10 meters using mainly SSB and sometimes the Digital modes. Equipment
he will use is an Icom IC-7100 transceiver into an End-Fed antenna. QSL
via his home callsign, by the Bureau, direct or LoTW.
3XY, GUINEA (IOTA Op). Operators Alain/F5OZC and Sebastien/F8DQZ will
once again be active as 3XY3D from Kassa Island (AF-051), Los Islands
(Iles de Los), between November 1-30th. Activity will be on 40-10 meters
using mainly CW. QSL via F5OZC, by the REF Bureau or direct (no eQSL,
no LoTW).
3Y0Z BOUVET PRESS RELEASE (dated July 30th). Ralph, K0IR, sent out the
following, stating "This is a great example of how the ham radio community
can cooperate and work together for the common good of all." : As in any
group, the moral compass, accountability, and integrity of amateur radio
operators covers a wide spectrum. The best of these character qualities
in the ham radio community came to light last week.
FlexRadio Systems and Ranko Boka, 4O3A, of SKY SAT wanted to be absolutely
positive that they would in no way compromise the success of the Bouvet
Island DXpedition. They looked at this DXpedition as a once in a lifetime
experience for many DX'ers and put the success of 3Y0Z above personal gain,
competition, and acclaim.
FlexRadio Systems and SKY SAT were concerned that: a.) Parts availability
for production of the FlexRadio amplifiers may be a problem. b.) Sending a
total of 14 amplifiers to Bouvet would cut into inventory they had promised
to their customers. c.) Meeting our shipping date might compromise their
testing and quality control.
We will take several new FlexRadio Power Genius XL amplifiers to Bouvet.
However, FlexRadio and Ranko reached out personally to ACOM to assist in
supporting 3Y0Z. On short notice, and within 24 hours, ACOM agreed to help
make the Bouvet DXpedition the best that it can be and agreed to provide
12 ACOM 1500 amplifiers.
ACOM, FlexRadio Systems, and SKY SAT/4O3A put aside personal gain and
competition and worked together to help the Bouvet Island DXpedition be
a better experience for you the DX'ers. These are truly quality people.

3Y0Z BOUVET PRESS RELEASE (dated August 5th). The Northern California DX
Foundation is pleased to announce a contribution of $100,000 to the 3Y0Z
Bouvet Island DXpedition planned for January 2018. Bouvet is #2 on the
ClubLog Most Wanted List. This is the largest contribution in the history
of NCDXF.
In 2016, NCDXF-sponsored DXpeditions activated five of the ten most-
needed entities. These DXpeditions put 457,000 QSOs into DXers' logs.
That year we spent $156,000 to fund these and other DXpeditions. The 3Y0Z
DXpedition to Bouvet Island early next year is likely to be one of the
most expensive DXpeditions ever attempted estimated at over $740,000.
The 20 team members have already contributed just over half of this amount.

DXpeditions to rare entities like Bouvet and others in the Southern
Ocean are becoming more expensive, a trend that we believe will continue.
NCDXF’s primary purpose is to help fund well-organized DXpeditions to
rare, difficult and expensive entities, like Bouvet. During the last 45
years, NCDXF has granted over $1 million to hundreds of DXpeditions
helping to put an “all-time-new-one” (ATNO) in the log and make DX happen
for thousands of DXers worldwide. The credit for these large grants goes
to the NCDXF contributors, individuals and clubs who support the DX
community. Without those contributions, DXpeditions to entities like Bouvet
or other rare locations would not be possible.

5H, TANZANIA. Chas, NK8O/VE3ISD, will once again be active as 5H3DX from
Zinga, Tanzania, between November 7th and December 4th. Activity will
be from the pediatric hospital at Zinga. Usual operations will be holiday
style. Power output will be the legal limit for Tanzania at 100w and the
primary antenna should be a Hexbeam configured for 40-6 meters, including
the WARC bands. Operations will be primarily CW. He states that he will
use a simple wire antenna and his KX3 with a KXPA100 amp. See QSL info

8P, BARBADOS. Mac, WT4BT, will be active as 8P9MT from "New Moon Villa"
in "Upper Carlton" area near Gibbes Beach on Barbados Island (NA-021)
between November 4-10th. Activity will be on various HF bands. QSL via
his home callsign, direct, by the Bureau or LoTW.
9X, RWANDA. Alan, KE4TA, will be active as 9X0TA from Kigali for a 3 year
period sometime early August. This will be his first 'DXpedition'. Activity
will be primarily on 20/17 meters using 600W/100W of power. He does have
antennas or antenna+tuner combinations for 80-10 meters and 6m. Modes
will be SSB, the Digital modes and some CW. Power may be restricted by
the Rwandan authorities in accordance with their laws. Radio is a Yaesu
FT-991, and antenna will be a Hexbeam on a push up tower. Alan, states,
"Noise levels here are extremely high. Please don't be offended if I'm
not answering your call, I likely can't hear you." QSL via DIRECT to

CQ MAGAZINE NEWS (Press Release - 2017 Young Ham of the Year). It was
announced on August 1st [edited]: Marty Sullaway, KC1CWF, of Newton, MA,
has been selected as the 2017 Bill Pasternak WA6ITF Memorial Amateur Radio
Newsline Young Ham of the Year. Marty, 15, is the son of Robert David
Sullaway and Gail Cheryl Schulman.
Marty was first licensed as a Technician in November 2014. He quickly
worked his way to General earning his ticket in February 2015. He became
an Extra Class operator this past February.
Marty is co-founder of the Eastern Massachusetts Contesting Club and
trustee of its call sign KR1DX. Marty created the club to get more young
people involved in amateur radio in the suburban Boston area. He has helped
teach and mentor many young people, sparking interest in HF contesting.
Marty is a member of the Yankee Clipper Contest Club and very active in
the contest community. He currently serves on the American Radio Relay
League Contest Advisory Committee.
KC1CWF's efforts in contesting have netted many accolades including the
2015 CQWW SSB USA "Rookie" plaque. His score of 1,312,305 operating from
K1VR still stands as the CQWW rookie record.
Marty also is QSL manager for VY1AAA, XO1X, and CI1AAA operated by the
Yukon Canam Contest Club. Marty is also board member of the Clay Center
Amateur Radio Club which promotes amateur radio at the Dexter/Southfield
School in Brookline, MA. He has been involved in the club's Field Day
planning and has assisted with antenna and HF station design, as well
as repeater operations.
He started a podcast called "The Phasing Line" and, along with Sterling
Coffey, N0SSC, discusses topics such as home-brew antennas, contesting,
and activities of youth in amateur radio.
Marty appeared at the 2016 Dayton Hamvention Youth Forum where gave a
presentation: "Homebrewing Fun: Making Your Own Gear for Contest Stations."
He appears on the W5KUB "Amateur Radio Roundtable" webcast and even serves
as a back-up studio when technical issues arise.
Marty enjoys the technical aspects of the hobby, designing and building
systems for remote amateur station operation and enjoys computer pro-
gramming. Marty also is involved in amateur radio public service activities,
including serving as a net control operator for the Boston Marathon.
He is also the owner of his own consulting company "Newtown Mass Tech,"
where he handles such tasks as home computer installation to VOIP connec-
tions for clients throughout the Boston area.
Marty is entering his sophomore year at Meridian Academy in Jamaica
Plain, Massachusetts this fall where he has been active in the Model
United Nations program for four years and has earned multiple awards,
including best delegate. Marty is currently vice president of his United
Synagogue Youth chapter and is involved in an Israeli folk dance group.
His nominator, Joe Eisenberg, K0NEB, described Marty as an "extraordinary
young man." "Marty has accomplished things at age 15 that many hams take
years to do. And, he is only beginning."
Marty will be recognized during the Huntsville Hamfest on Aug. 19th in
the Von Braun Center, Huntsville Alabama.
The Young Ham of the Year Award was inaugurated by William Pasternak,
WA6ITF, in 1986. Upon his passing in 2015, Bill's name was added to the
award as a memorial to his commitment to recognizing the accomplishments
of young people to the amateur radio service.

HD8, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS (Postponed). Geoff, G8OFQ, announced, "Unfortunately,
due to circumstances beyond my control, the DXpedition to HC8 has been
postponed". He was expected to be active from Isabela Island (SA-004)
between August 1st and October 31st, as HC8/G8OFQ.

In this newsletter, Stanislav "Stan" Vatev, LZ1GC, will give you the inside
story of running a two man DXpedition in the South Pacific to the Solomon
Islands and Temotu Province as H44GC and H40GC, respectively. INDEXA has
supported Stan's activities in the past. In the earlier effort and in this
effort, we learn that sleeplessness is the norm if the needs of the pileup
are to be met. After reading his story, I think you'll agree that Stan was
conscientious in his commitment to those who wished to find their callsign
in his log.

between September 30th and October 1st. St. Mary's Island is
also known as Coconut Island, and is a small island in the
Arabian Sea off the coast of Malpe in Udupi, Karnataka, India.
It is less than a kilometer square. The isles are known for
their distinctive geological formation of columnar basaltic
lava. Activity will be on various HF bands and modes. The
team will be operating on battery power with an array of
antennas from verticals to yagis to phase shift vertical

J5, GUINEA BISSAU (Update). The Italian DXpedition Team will be active
as J5T from Bubaque Island (AF-020) between November 13-25th. Operators

Marcello/IK2DIA, Stefano/IK2HKT, Angelo/IK2RZP and Mac/JA3USA. They expect

LU, ARGENTINA (Special Event). Special event station, LU4AAO/A, was
expected to be active this past weekend (on August 5th, 1300-2300 UTC,
and August 6th, 1300-1900 UTC). Activity was to celebrate Tiro Federal
anniversary. Operations were to be on 80/40 meters SSB; even UTC hours
on 20m JT65/FT8; odd UTC hours on 20m CW. QSL via LU4AAO, direct, by the

NP2, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. Operators Fred/K9VV, Ralph/K9ZO, Ron/KK9K and

Amateur Radio" Gallows Bay Club Station on St. Croix (NA-106), during

Contest (October 28-29th) as a Multi-2 entry. QSL via W4PA. Operators

REALTIME BAND CONDITIONS WEB SITE :
The purpose of this experimental Web site is to provide 24-7-365 actual
(REALTIME) band condition information to CW QRPp, QRPe and CW/SSB for
Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of
benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for Nets
and casual QSO's. This information is NOT based on any software pre-
dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a
new Ionospheric sounding method called "HF Ionospheric Interferometry"
which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by NASA.

T45, CUBA (Reminder). Operators Moses/CM2YV, Bob/CO2KL, Amed/CO2AME and
possibly others will be active as T45FM from the Faro Puta Maya Light-
house (ILLW CU-005) during the International Lighthouse Lightship Week-
end (ILLW) between August 19-20th. They plan to have 6 stations active
on all the bands using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. QSL Manager is
RW6HS direct only.
V4, ST. KITTS. John, W5JON/V47JA, informs OPDX that he will once again
be active as V47JA from his vacation home in Calypso Bay, St. Kitts
(NA-104, WW Loc. FK87SG), located 200 feet from the Caribbean Sea, between
October 15th and November 7th. Activity will be on 160-6 meters (incl.
60m) using SSB. His operation will also include the CQWW DX SSB Contest
(October 28-29th) as a Single-Op/All-Band entry. Equipment is a Kenwood
TS-590S and Elecraft KPA500 Amplifier. Antennas include: 31', 10-40m
Vertical, and 35', 40/80m Top Loaded Vertical; and newly added, shortened
160m dipole and 3 element Yagi for 6m. Also, XYL Cathy, W5HAM, will
occasionally operate as V47HAM. ALL QSLs go to W5JON direct or via LoTW.
NO Bureau QSLs.
V6, MICRONESIA. Operators Sho, JA7HMZ, will once again be active as V63DX
from Pohnpei Island (OC-010) between November 24th and December 1st.
Activity will be on 160-6 meters, all modes and including the CQWW DX CW
Contest (November 25-26th) as a Single-Op/All-Band entry signing V6A. He
will be looking for European stations on 160m before and after the contest.

VK9M, MELLISH REEF (Update). Operators Dietmar/DL3DXX, Morten/LB8DC,
Robert/N7QT (Team Leader), Brian/N9ADG, Eric/SM1ALH, Hawk/SM5AQD (Co-
Team Leader), Lasse/SM5GLC and David/W5XU (recently added) will be active
as VK9MA from Mellish Reef (OC-072) between November 3-16th. Activity will
be from Heralds-Beacon Islet, the only permanent land in the reef, on 160-10
meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. They plan to have five stations on the air.

WRTC 2018 NEWS (Press Release - Friedrichshafen, Germany, dated July 14th).

DX Engineering has increased its support for the World Radiosport Team
Championship 2018 (WRTC). The company is now a Gold Level sponsor. The
announcement was made by WRTC 2018 at the Bavarian Contest Club annual
dinner in Friedrichshafen, Germany this past July.

Duffy, K3LR, Chief Operating Officer of DX Engineering. "We strongly
believe in the global impact of WRTC2018 as Contesters and DXers from
around the world will take part."

WRTC 2018 will be held July 12-16th, 2018, in the Jessen/Wittenberg
region of Germany, south of Berlin. Approximately 60 teams will fight
for the title of World Champion. Unlike the usual contesting, WRTC 2018
participants must use identical antennas in the same geographical region,
which eliminates many variables. The WRTC 2018 will be supported by about
300 volunteers who will set up the antennas and host the infrastructure.

About WRTC 2018 - WRTC 2018 e.V. is the organizer of the World Radio-
sport Team Championship 2018 in Germany. The WRTC is held every four years.
Previous WRTCs were held in Seattle/USA (1990), San Francisco/USA (1996),
Slovenia (2000), Finland (2002) Brazil (2006) Russia (2010) and New
England/USA (2014).
XT2, BURKINA FASO (Update). Harald, DF2WO, will once again be active as
XT2AW from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. He informs OPDX that he will arrive
on September 25th, and plans to build antennas on the 26th, which is a
Hexbeam at 8 meters high and dipoles for the lower bands. Activity will
be holiday style on 40-10 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. He
states that he works mostly on the Digital modes (PSK31, JT65 and RTTY)
and slow CW. Harald states, "As soon as the conditions go up to USA, I
will work the US. Also, I will test 60m a little." Radio is a FT-450D.

YB72, INDONESIA (Special Event). There are now 10 special event stations
active until August 17th, to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of Indonesia's

October 2017, before sailing to Australia....
