A60, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (Special Event - Emirates Mars Mission - Hope
Probe). The United Arab Emirates has officially entered the global space
exploration race. This came after His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed
al Nahyan, President of the UAE, issued a decree to establish the UAE
Space Agency, and began working on sending the first Arab and Islamic
probe to Mars, a project named "Hope Probe". This makes the UAE one of
only nine countries working to explore Mars. The probe will start its
journey in 2020 (expected to be launched from Japan's Tanegashima Space
Center on July 19th; depending on weather), and is scheduled to arrive at
Mars by 2021, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the union of the
UAE. The planning, management and implementation of the probe project are
implemented by an Emirati team, whose members depend on their skills and
diligence to acquire all space exploration-related knowledge and applying
it. The program is fully funded and supervised by the UAE Space Agency,
while the probe is being developed by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre
(MBRSC), in collaboration with international partners. The objectives of
the mission include building Emirati human resources that are highly
qualified in space technology, developing knowledge, scientific research
and space applications to benefit mankind. Other goals of the mission
include establishing a sustainable knowledge-based economy, promoting
diversification and encouraging innovation, elevating the UAE's status
in the space race and further widen benefits. The mission will help to
promote the UAE's efforts in scientific explorations, and to build inter-
national partnerships in the sector to promote the position of the UAE.

CY0C SABLE ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Postponed 2021). Murray, WA4DAN,
reports [edited]: The CY0C Sable Island DXpedition team learned this
week that our DXpedition will have to be postponed until October 2021
due to the ongoing worldwide Coronavirus. Team leader Murray, WA4DAN,
has been in regular contact with Parks Canada during this process. Parks
Canada advised that no International visitors will be allowed on Sable
Island for the remainder of 2020. The good news is that the Parks Canada
Sable Island manager has already extended an invitation to conduct our
planned DXpedition for October 2021. The DXpedition team voted to un-
animously accept this invitation.
We appreciate all of the foundations, clubs and individuals who have
contributed funding for our DXpedition. We are pleased to offer the
following options to those who have contributed to this DXpedition:

  1) A complete and total refund of donations made to the CY0C DXpedition.
  2) Foundations, clubs and individuals can opt to apply their donations
to the 2021 Sable Island CY0C DXpedition.

Please let us know your preference and we will act promptly on this
matter.
From the entire 2021 Sable Island DXpedition team, our sincere thanks
for your efforts and understanding.

JX, JAN MAYEN (Update). A team of operators will be active as JX0X from
Kvalrosbukta, Jan Mayen (EU-022), between September 15th and October 5th,
2021. Operators mentioned are Ken/LA7GIA, Mats/RM2D, Dima/RA9USU and
Dominik/R4BE (DL5EBE). The team has been planning this operation for 14
months and finally received all permissions needed from the Military and
the Norwegian authorities. Jan Mayen is a volcanic island and its sur-
rounding sea waters became a Nature reserve some years ago, imposing heavy
restrictions on where to set up a camp. The QTH given by the Military will
be on the western part of the island (Kvalrossbukta), which is also the
best suitable location for North American contacts with an unobstructed
path across saltwater. Activity will be on all bands and modes, but the
DXpedition will focus on the lower bands (160-30m) using CW and the Digital
modes. They will also do the other bands like 60, 20 and possible 17m and
SSB depending on the conditions. Their aim to work 50,000 QSOs. All QSLs
are via ClubLog's OQRS. The team is looking for supporters and sponsors.
A JX0X Web page is now active at: http://jx0x.com

W8S SWAINS ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS. Martin, PA4WM, from Holland, posted
the following on the W8S Swains Island Web page on July 13th [edited]:
Hi All -- In the beginning of the year, just a few days before packing
all antenna gear at Ronald's place, I had the 160m vertical rebuild but
not tested and adjusted. Today we had a beautiful summers day. Perfect
to set it up and adjust the lengths and hairpin coil/match to the right
frequency. That saves time after arrival. So, although we are all waiting
for things to develop in a direction we all hope for, preparations
continues HI.
