30 METER SLIM
Several report working a station signing VU2TS on July
30th. Raj, VU2ZAP, reports that he talked to Miku, VU2TS. He states that
he was not active on 10 MHz.
3B6, AGALEGA
The following is an excerpt from a huge press release that
was sent out this week by Carlos, CT1END: " The preparations for this DX-
pedition will soon come to a close. Everything is running according to plan.
On September 23rd, Karl, HB9JAI and Jack, F6HMD head for Agalega in order to
make final preparations on the spot. The rest of the crew takes off October
1st, flight MK071 from Zurich, 2200 local time." The crew will be missing
two Swiss members who cannot come to 3B6. HB9JAX, Adolf, had to cancel the
trip for professional reasons; HB9FMU, Phil, because of severe health
problems. However, the team has been completed by the following operators:
9A4DU/Tony, CT1AGF/Luis, G4EDG/Steve and DL6UAA/Mart. Activity will begin
about October 8th ending October 25th. OPDX InterNet Subscribers will
receive the complete press release as an additional bulletin.

18-26th. Activity on all bands CW/SSB are expected including 6 meters.
QSL via Z32AU.
3W, VIETNAM
"The 59(9) DX Report" reports that Hans, WA1LWS, is planning
to be active from here between November 9-26th. This will include the
CQ WW CW Contest. He has applied for the uses of 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10
meters, however, 80/40 meters may be doubtful. He operates exclusively
on CW.
9K2, KUWAIT
Look for Bob, K4CY (ex-N6BFM), to return to Kuwait. He plans
to reactivate his old callsign 9K2ZZ. He is expected to be active this
time on PSK31. QSL via W8CNL, direct only.
9X, RWANDA
Charlie, N4CT (ex-T5CT, SV0CT, G5BAU, GC5BAU, TJ1AW, K4PHY/
YV5, DL5IX) will be in Kigali from January 12th through March 12th
working at the U.S. Embassy. He is currently looking for some place to
guest operate while there and would appreciate any info on where he might
be able to. His E-mail address is: n4ct@onebox.com
A5, BHUTAN
A52FH is now history. All operations were stopped on September
14th, at 0125z on 20 meters CW. The team managed to make 14,015 QSOs, but
this is not the final result. According to Mark, F6JSZ, the team thanks
everyone for contacting them and especially Rafik, F5CQ, and Laurent,
F8BBL, the two pilot stations. They say it was a fabulous experience to
operate from Bhutan. Last week before leaving, F5LMJ and F2VX installed
a 40/80m dipole and a Cushcraft R8 vertical, with a FT-900, TS-440 and
FL-2100Z at the radio club of Thimphu. On September 12th, at 1500z, the
first QSO was made by Thinley Dorji, General Director of Telecommunications
in Bhutan, with the new A51AA callsign. Later in the week, Peter, ON6TT,
was operating from A51AA. He was last heard on September 16th.
AX9, NORFOLK ISLAND
"The Daily DX" reports that a multi-national team
of YL operators from seven countries will be active as AX9YL from October
5-12th. The team will be active on CW and SSB. The special callsign was
obtained by the WIA Victoria for this trip, so QSL will be via the VK3
bureau or direct to VK3DYL, Gwen Tilson, 3 Gould Court, Mt Waverley,
Victoria 3149, Australia, with return postage and a SAE.
CE0Y, EASTER ISLAND
Yuij, JA3IG, was very active this past weekend on
15 meters CW/SSB. Length of stay is unknown. QSL via JA3IG.
FG, GUADELOUPE
Four members of the Florida DXPedition Group (FDXPG),
Bob/KR4DA, William/N2WB, Bill/W4WX and Clarence/W9AAZ, will be here from
October 24-31st. They will be a Multi-Single entry in the CQWW Contest as
FG5BG. Look for them before and after the contest signing FG/homecall on
CW, RTTY and SSB. QSL FG5BG to KR4DA, FG/N2WB to N2OO and others to home
callsign. For more info, visit the following two Web pages:
HO, PANAMA (Update)
Wil/DJ7AA, Manfred/DK1BT, and Tina/DL6MYL are now
active as HO1A from Contadora Island (NA-072) until October 1st. Their
activity will include the CQWW RTTY Contest. Outside of the contest,
they will be mainly active on CW, the WARCs and lowbands. They mentioned
on the air this past weekend NO RTTY until the contest. QSL via the bureau
to DL6MYL or direct to her CBA. Check out their very interesting Web page
for more details at:
HQ, HONDURAS (Update from OPDX.472/473)
By the time you read this,
HQ0R will be on air from "Valle de Los Angeles", 20 miles from Tegucigalpa,
Honduras. There will be 3 stations active, 24 hours a day, operating on
SSB, CW and RTTY on all bands. Operation is organized by "Radio Club
Tegucigalpa" and URE, "Union de Radioaficionados Espanoles" and its
RADIOSOLIDARIDAD special team. QSLs go via EA4URE, P.O. Box 220,
Madrid 28080, Spain. For more and up-to-date information, check the

IOTA NEWS
EU-004. Laci, HA6NL, will be on Mallorca Island with his family for
a holiday between September 28th and October 5th, and be
active as EA6/HA6NL/p. He plans to be on all HF bands, mainly
CW, but expect some SSB operation, too. Suggested frequencies
are: 1831, 3511, 7011, 10104, 14031, 18081, 21031, 24901 and
28011 kHz. QSL via CBA.
EU-067. Look for Eric, KU6J, to be active from September 21-28th, and operating from Thira Island (aka Santorini) in the Cyclades group, Greek Islands (SV8). His callsign will be SV8/KU6J/P. His equipment includes an IC-706MKIIG (100W), dipoles and random wire with antenna tuner. He will be focusing on CW, primarily on the WARC bands. QSL via KU6J either direct or via bureau. Eric also mentions that he will be logging manually, so there will not be an online log available. He also added that his YL reluctantly allowed him to bring the radio suitcase, so this won't be a full-time operation!
EU-183. Pit, YO3JW, is planning activity from Sacalinu Mare Island between September 29th and October 1st. This will be a 72 hour operation (longer or shorter depending on local conditions). He will try to work on all bands, CW, SSB, may be RTTY and PSK31. He will also take a beam and a 100 watt radio. QSL via YO3JW.
OC-067. Francisco, CT1EAT, will sign FO0FRA, from October 24th through November 2nd, from Mai Mona Motu. He will also operate during the CQWW DX SSB Contest. He is not sure yet if he will use a his callsign or a special one. He will let us know ASAP. QSL via bureau to CT1EAT, or direct to: Francisco Costa, P.O.Box 172, 7801-902 Beja, Portugal.
OC-212. A team of VK operators will be using the callsign VI2BI to activate Broughton Island from October 6-15th. This follows the successful operation of last year when, in 3 days, the team made over 2000 QSOs. Activity will be on most bands for the duration of the operation and will involve SSB, CW 10 meters FM and hopefully PSK. The team will arrive on the island at approx. 0200z, October 6th and expect to be on air around 0500z.
OC-234. Browse Island Saga Update. Alan, VK4AAR, informs OPDX of the following: "I apologise that I didn't follow up with the drama on Browse Island in the first few days of this month. Things were happening and I was spending a great deal of time on the phone to authorities and the wives of the team (scattered all over Northern territory and Western Australia). The outcome was that the operators were picked up by an Australian naval vessel and eventually delivered safely to Darwin. The skipper stayed with his catamaran (which was his home also) as he believed it could be refloated even doing so alone. He has radio and is being monitored. Browse Island produced only 2,500 (approx) QSOs as the crew spent most of their time digging sand away from the vessel which was above the high water line. The expedition was more costly than expected due to this occurance so, if you are able, please feel free to donate a little something with the QSL card. It will be greatly appreciated."
SA-058. Ray, DL2GG/YV5, and others will give it another try to activate the rock Farallon Centinela. If all works as planned, they will be active as YW5FC next weekend (September 22-24th). Last year they could not get their generator up to the rock due to extreme tides (see their failed trip to Farallon Centinela at: http://www.kilohertz.de
KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS
Operators Yama/JA1SGU and Kazu/JJ1KZI will be active
as KH0T and KH0V from Saipan Island, October 5-8th. They will operate on
80-10 meters (WARC bands included) mainly on CW. QSL via home callsigns
direct.
KH5, PALMYRA
Mike, KH6ND, continues to be active as KH6ND/KH5. He was
heard over the last several days mostly on 160/80/40 meters CW between
1030 and 1200z.

Agalega - 3B6RF Bulletin Nr 7 / 8
Schedule
The preparations for this DXpedition will soon come to a close. Everything is running according to plan. 23 September Karl, HB9JAI and Jack, F6HMD head for Agalega in order to make final preparations on the spot. The rest of the crew takes off 1 October, flight MK071 from Zurich, 2200 local time.
Crew
Unfortunately two Swiss members cannot come to 3B6. HB9JAX, Adolf had to
cancel the trip for professional reasons, HB9FMU, Phil because of severe
health problems. However, the team has been completed by the following
operators:
9A4DU, Tony
CT1AGF, Luis
G4EDG, Steve
DL6UAA, Mart
Equipment
The rigs have been picked up at YAESU Germany and transported to
Switzerland where they have been tested.
6 FT1000MP
6 VL1000
6 Power supplies
1 FT 847
1 FT 920
Thanks to NF6S, Larry the numerous Force 12 antennas have also arrived in Switzerland and been assembled in order to check for resonance etc. All of them are brand new. The lowband antennas and the 6el 6m beam have also been successfully tested and are now ready for shipping.
The accessories are ready to go, too. 800m coax cable, bandpass filters and RX filters (ICE and homebrew by HB9BQI, G3KHZ, HB9ABO), 4000 feet Dacron rope for the guying etc. ....
Operating
We were informed that the KH5 activity will be delayed by two weeks. The team will not be on the air prior to 18 October.
Aims: Our aim is not to make as many QSOs as possible but to contact as many different calls. Since Europe and Japan are simple to work we will give priority to North and Southamerica during the openings to theses parts of the world.
Amateur population:
In some countries there are lots of amateurs whereas in other countries
we can only find a small number of active Dxers.
Bearing in mind this fact we want to work stations proportionally to the ratio of calls and country. The statistics below show the distribution of the major amateur population.
It is necessary that we also consider sparsly populated areas even if the pileups are not big. A smaller QSO rate simply must be accepted in this case.
Asia 50% (JA=3D 1,000.000; DX.int. 250.000)
Northamerica 26%
Europe 18%
Southamerica 5%
Pacific 1%
Africa 1%
Distribution of the US amateur population regarding coastal areas
Eastcoast 49% (1-2-3-4-8)
Midwest 26% (9-0-5)
Westcoast 25% (6-7)
A close look into the logs of the 3B7RF expedition back in 1998 has shown that only 10% of the QSOs have been established with the USA. Yet, as you can see in the statistics above 26 % of the radio amateurs live in North America. Hence we must concentrate on the USA this time. Our goal is to establish about 20% of the QSOs with the US. Of course this is a great challenge because working US stations from Agalega can be compared with working the Pacific from Europe. In addition to that we would also like to focus on the Westcoast. During the 3B7RF activity too many contacts have been made with the Eastcoast. Thus we have to benefit from each possible opening via longpath. We owe this approach to the amateurs at the westcoast since they have generously supported our expedition.
Modes
With no doubt CW is the most efficient mode. Yet, we also operate
several other modes to please everybody's needs: We will be active in:
SSB
RTTY
PSK 31
6 m
Sat
If the propagation is excellent we will also show up on 10 FM (29550 to
29700)
Satellite operating
Our satellite activity from Agalega will be the first activity in this mode from this remote place. Unfortunately we cannot use the P3D. Since the launch of P3D has been postponed to Ariane flight 507 in September/October we will concentrate on using the satellite AO-10. But attention! AO10 has got a problem: its batteries are dead, so the satellite shuts down during periods of eclipse. We cannot use the satellite if the beacon frequency wavers, or if downlink signals chirp, warble or drift irregularly. Such FMing occurs when sunlight strikes the satellite's olar cells at an unfavourable angle, resulting in insufficient power to the electronics.
Apart from our activity via AO-10 we will also use RS-12/13 respectively RS-15 sporadically, which doesn't allow worldwide operation. As far as I can see it is unrealistic to reach more than 1.000 QSOs via satellite. 300 to 500 QSOs can be considered as a very good result. We will publish all the necessary data of our activity on our homepage and sat-bulletins on time to make sure that interested hams can successfully QSOs with 3B6RF. It seems, that it will be very difficult to contact the US-Westcoast. So we have to fully concentrate on the few small windows. All other continents can be reached more easily. The satellite-antennas have been checked and are ready for shipment. We will be using a 9ele antenna yagi for 2m-downlink incl. a preamplifier by ssb-electronics and a 21ele-Tonna yagi for 70cm uplink. The transceiver is a Yaesu FT-847. It is very simple to set up the antenna-system. The computer program is SATSCAN by G4GPQ (AMSAT UK). The antenna tracking will be done without any rotor. We will use our head, our program and our hands.
AO-10 Mode B
Uplink 435.030 ? 435.180 CW/LSB
Downlink 145.975 ? 145.825 CW/USB
Beacon 145.810 CW
Our downlink frequency will be 145.900 MHz, +/- QRM. In the case of heavy pile-up we will listen 5up and in the case of heavy QRM on our first frequency we will use 145.920 MHz.
RS-12/13
Mode KT Uplink 21.210 ? 21.250 CW/USB
Mode K Downlink 29.410 ? 29.450 CW/USB
Mode T Downlink 145.910 ? 145.950 CW/USB
Beacons 29.408 CW and 145.908 CW
RS-15
Mode A Uplink 145.858 ? 145.898 CW/USB
Downlink 29.354 ? 29.394 CW/USB
Beacons 29.3525 CW and 29.3987 CW
Don't forget ? 100 watts is more than enough to produce an adequate downlink signal! CW is the most efficient mode, but we know that most of the satellite-enthusiasts prefer SSB. (73 Matt, DL3KUD)
6m operating The 50MHz band really is a "Magic Band". Can you believe that on a dead VHF-Band you can suddenly hear a DX station about 10000km away from you? That's the "Magic Band". Now, we are at the solar maximum of cycle 23 and worldwide contacts may be possible via F2-Reflections and TEP (TransEquatorial Propagation) very often. We have good chances to use F2 when the solar flux index is 185 and the earth magnetic A=3D20 .. 30. Six-meter F2 contacts are generally completed only over paths entirely in daylight. Limited experience with TEP indicates that it peaks between 1700 and 2200 local time. TEP signals have a rough aurora-like note. So it is better to work slow CW than SSB. High power and large antennas are not required to work TEP. A strong pile-up will be sure from European areas. For using TEP from 3B6 the antenna will be pointed to the north (360' +/- 45'). We will operate 3 different modes on 6m: MemoryScanMode, Beacon Mode and X-Mozilla-Status: 0009e-up. Always remember: nobody can tell the duration of an opening. It can be some minutes or some hours.
PSK 31
We will also be QRV in this most recent mode which is becoming very popular. Therefore we will activate the DX bands 20, 15 and 10m. We will operate this mode alternating with RTTY. The following equipment will be used:
Transceiver FT1000MP + Linear VL 1000
Power: 200 W
Antenna: Force 12 Multiband Beam 3el
Computer Toshiba CX230, Pentium 133 mc
Software WinPSK31 Version 2.02
QRG 14068.15 kc +/- 1.2 kc
21078.15 kc +/- 1.2 kc
28078.15 kc +/- 1.2 kc
We call CQ on these frequencies. In order to avoid pileups we will listen in the range of +/- 1.2 kc. This means, that you should slightly shift the audio of your soundcard, f.i. set the TX freq. to 1500 Hz and the RX freq. to 1350 Hz or vice versa. Unlike in normal operation 3B6RF sets the button "net" to off so that your TX freq is the master. This is a good solution which will improve the chances of the "little guns".
Propagation
We have done intensive studies on propagation in order to take advantage of all possible openings. These plans showing times and frequencies of the expected openings can be consulted on our webs site www.agalega2000.ch. You can also find photos of the greyline showing the short windows on 40, 80 and 160.=20
Furthermore there is a link to another propagation tool.
Frequency plan
We will try to stick to the following frequency plan as long as QRMless operation is possible. In case of any changes we will publish them on our website. You can find the table in the attachment running under Microsoft Excel.
Policemen
We haven't ordered any policemen so far. But there will probably be a lot of volunteers. However, if there will be too many of these helpers we have to sligthly shift our TX frequency. So, if you can't hear us anymore simply move your VFO (CW 1kHz, SSB 2kHz up or down)!!!
Pilots
We have the following pilot stations:
HB9HFN, Cedric and HB9MX, Kurt, Europe and pilot coordinator,

These people are our main public relations and feedback channel to and from our DX audience. They will feel how our expedition is perceived and what we can do to improve. Their input will be very important. This will be feedback on our signal strengths etc. but also possible openings to look out for, things to try etc. atop of the routine feedback. The input/output to/from the pilots will go via satellite Inmarsat, and printouts will be displayed at our information board.
QSL
Attention. 3B6 will not count as a new entity!!! The distance is just not long enough.
QSL will be accepted via buro or direct to:
Ambrosi Fluetsch, HB9AGH
Lerchenweg 29
CH 8046 Zurich
Switzerland
or to HB9AGH via bureau
To keep the costs at a minimum please use for the return to you a neutral envelope: No Airmail sign, no A post or similar, just put your own address on it.
Especially valid for USA/Canada, Europe and Japan. Cards will be shipped anyhow by airmail.
Cards with no or insufficient return postage (e.g. an airmail envelope plus 1 IRC or 1 US$) will be confirmed vie bureau. Minimum requirement for airmail envelope: 2 IRC or 2 US$ (for max. 20g, or 2 QSL cards)
Logsearch
During and in the aftermath of the expedition you can consult our homepage to find out whether you are in the log or not. We try to update the onlinelog within 24 hours. This will be done via Inmarsat. HB9HFN, our headpilot will transfer the data to our website. We hope that you, dear DXer, will benefit from this system. By doing so dupes can be avoided. This service is very expensive: 1 minute of datatransfer (2kB/s) via Inmarsat costs more than 6 US$!!!
The 3B6 team is looking forward to working you on the bands. Best 73!!

We are now requesting that if you work us on 5 or 6 bands and would like a certificate, to please send us a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (Business Size) along with $1 or IRC equalivant ( to assist with printing costs ) with your Log Information to W2UDT for processing.

Carlos Luis Caceres, KD4SYB and Pero Simundza, 9A4SP are 2 of the 3 persons killed last week in Timor and both are HAMS. I have seen your page about 9A4sp but we do not have one for KD4SYB. I am his father and do not know how to prepared a page. I wish some one can do something similar for Carlos. Following is some information that can be used. Let me know if My request is possible.
Thanks,

--------------------------
Carlos Luis Caceres, was borne in Jan 9, 1967 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
My son and and son of this world, Carlos Luis Caceres (KD4SYB), was killed in Timor, Indonesia this pass week at a young age of 33.
He was murdered by the same people that he was protecting and defending their human rights. He was one of the protecting officer representing the United Nation in West Timor performing humanitarian service.
I am very proud of my son. At 23 he was a lawyer, help and save people life all over the word. He was fluent in Spanish, English, French, Check and Russian. He completed a degree in journalism at the University in Gainesville, Florida (1988) and a Law degree at Cornell University (1990) in New York. His ability with different languages and his vast legal knowledge, helped him perform at international level.
He should be an example to all young students because Carlos, was a dedicate student that establishes himself by hard and dedicated study. He love the arts, music and the human race.
His body will be transferred this comming week from Timor, Indonesia to his final resting place in Miami, Florida.
