3B6, AGALEGA

4S, SRI LANKA
Phil, G3SWH, and his XYL will be here (IOTA AS-003) from November 9-22nd, and Phil has been allocated the callsign 4S7WHG. They will be travelling extensively during their stay, and he hopes to be active on CW only, all bands from 40-10 meters, for a few hours at least on most days, circumstances permitting. This will be a holiday type operation with limited activity, although they will spend the last few days relaxing on the beach at Unawatuna in the south part of the island, where he hopes to be a little more active. Phil will have his IC-706 and R-7000 antenna with him. QSLs will be via G3SWH, either direct or via the RSGB bureau.

4W, EAST TIMOR
Rod, WC7N, the East Timor Pilot Station, reports that all things are going according to plan for next weekend's 4W/K7BV oper- ation (Refer to OPDX.475). There are some problems with flight schedules and weight limitations, but they are being worked on and all should arrive near to schedule. For up-to-date info, check Web page:

8Q, MALEDIVES
Just a reminder to look for Adam, W7MP, to be active as 8Q7AB from now until October 9th. His activity will be mostly on 40 meters CW and 20 meters CW/SSB. QSL via W7MP. (Refer to OPDX.475)

9X, RWANDA
"THE 59(9) DX REPORT" reports that Charlie, N4XT, will be working at the U.S. Embassy in Kigali in the year 2001 between January 12th through March 12th. He hopes to be active from this African nation.

A5, BHUTAN
It is official! The Bhutanese Dept. of Communications has given the go-ahead to Charly, K4VUD, to utilize 1000 watts transmit power in Bhutan in December 2000 for the three low bands. Charly states, "It will be cheaper per person if four people go at once... are there three more folks out there who want to be in Bhutan in early December 2000???" E-mail him at: k4vud@hotmail.com

BT4, CHINA
Look for the special amateur radio station during the 10th ARDF World Championships, BT4ARDF. The station will be located in the New Century Hotel. Reportedly, QSL cards are printed.

D44, CAPE VERDE (IOTA DXpedition Update to OPDX.475)
Jose, EA8EE, informs OPDX that he and Maneul/EA8BYG's plans for their November 1-8th operation from the Island of Sao Vicente (IOTA AF-86, new IOTA as of June) near the capital of Mindelo continue. The two will be active from Carlos', D44AC, QTH and use his callsign. Activity will be on all modes and bands. Please refer to OPDX.475. They now announce that their logs will be updated daily, as long as they are able to, on the Web page:

DXCC STATUS
Wayne Mills, N7NG/1, from Membership Services Department reports that the current turn-around for DXCC applications is about 8 weeks. They are working overtime to reduce this figure. The ARRL will be installing a new computer platform. This will allow them to make some improvements in the way the DXCC program works. By the end of the year 2001, they should be able to generate an E-mail receipt automatically for each DXCC application received. OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive a message that Jim, AD1C, received from Wayne, N7NG/1, on this status as an additional bulletin.

EP, IRAN (New Iranian Stations)
Mac, W3HC, informs OPDX that he received an E-mail from Iran which indicates that there will be 7 stations set up for the "Civilization Talks". Look for the old timers EP2FM, EP2CM and EP2ES, along with 4 new novices to be active with most of the activity from EP3PTT (the club station). They will notify Mac as soon as they have the callsigns of the new stations.

FS & PJ8, ST. MARTIN AND ST. MAARTEN
Rodger/N4ZC and Don/K4ZA will be active from both the French and Dutch sides of this island. Rodger informs OPDX that he will fly down to St. Maarten on October 16th. His activity will be on 160-6 meters CW/SSB before the CQWW SSB Contest. He states that he will try to operate around .025 kHz on CW for the non-Extra class guys when he is on 80-10 meters. Rodger will operate as both FS/N4ZC and PJ8/N4ZC before the contest. Don, K4ZA, will fly down on October 21st. He will also operate FS/K4ZA and PJ8/K4ZA before the contest. Each side (of the island) has a C4 beam. Rodger will be PJ8/N4ZC during the contest. QSL vis his home callsign. Don will be FS/K4ZA during the contest. QSL via his home callsign. Rodger states that the FS location is the highest point on the island at 424m, so the blue Caribbean can be seen for 360 deg. They will both fly home the morning after the contest.

IOTA NEWS
EU-012. Look for GS2MP to be active during the CQ WW Phone Contest (October 28/29th). GS2MP will be a separate multiplier for the CQWW scoring. The operators of this Multi-Multi entry will be Chris/GM3WOJ, Stewart/GM4AFF (GM0F), Jim/GM4TXX, and Keith/ GM4YXI. The Shetland Islands have the reference number: IOTA EU-012, IOSA reference SH1, WAB HU27 and locator IP90. This island can be reached by a 14 hour, 220 mile sea crossing from Aberdeen to Lerwick. The GS2MP QSL cards will be via their QSL Manager: Edwin Musto ZS5BBO, PO Box 211032, Bluff 4036, South Africa. For a few days before the contest some HF CW only operation may take place, and GM4AFF/P will be active on the 50 and 7 MHz bands. A group from the Nagoya area will be active from Guam Island (OC-026) on November 10-15th. They will have two IC-736, IC-706, FT-100 and a 500W Linear Amplifier for 160-10 meters, SSB/CW/RTTY. The following antennas will be used:

        80m - Inverted L             6m - 5 element Yagi @ 25m up

KH5K, KINGMAN REEF (Update)
The latest press release by the Kingman Reef/Palmyra DX Group and Garry Shapiro, NI6T, states preparations continue at an accelerating pace for the Kingman Reef DXpedition in mid- October. Some equipment has arrived in Honolulu with antennas, amplifiers and cables on their way. The motor schooner Machias is being prepared for the journey. Site planning is almost complete. Financial support is coming in from foundations, clubs and individuals (more is still needed). Contributions should be sent to Tom Harrell, N4XP, 2011 New High Shoals Rd., Watkinsville, GA 30677. KP2, ST. CROIX (U.S. Virgin Islands)
Look for Larry/K6RO and Herb/KG6OK to be active from October 25-31st. They will be active on CW, RTTY and SSB and possibly PSK-31. They will concentration on the WARC bands before and after the CQWW Contest. Larry, K6RO, will participate in CQWW SSB Contest as a SO/AB/HP effort using WP2Z. QSL WP2Z via KU9C. QSL KP2/K6RO and KP2/KG6OK via their home callsign.

OH0, ALAND ISLAND
A group of OH3 operators will be active from here (IOTA EU-002, OH County 008) until October 7th. Look for operators Mikko, OH0/OH3FM (QSL via OH3FM); Jussi, OH0/OH3YM (via OH3YM); Pertti, OH0LQK (via OH3LQK); Alpo, OH0MFP (via OH3MFP); and Markus, OH0KCB (via OH3RM) to be active on 80-10 meters, mainly on CW and RTTY.

PJ2, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES
Joeke, PA0VDV, will once again be active from here as PJ2/PA0VDV, October 26th through November 16th. Activity is expected to be CW only. QSL via homecall.

QSL INFO AND NEWS
4L0JAZZ was activated by Shale, 4L1BR, in Georgia on RTTY this past week. Shale told OPDX to QSL via his address on "QRZ.COM".

A52JS QSLs. Reports have surfaced that modified A52JS QSL cards are being sent out by Jim, VK9NS, with a note attached. It's actually a A51JS card from Jim's previous operation to Bhutan. It seems that the A52JS cards are missing in transit between EU and VK9NS. Jim sent out this modified card so that many can summit them in time for the DXCC September deadline submission. Notices will be sent out through the proper DX channels when the new A52JS card have arrived. Those who would like to receive a card should resend a SAE and IRC. We are sure that many would like to thank Jim for his thoughtfulness.

QSL QSOs for A61AJ in the RTTY DX Contest last weekend go to W3UR: Bernie McClenny, 3025 Hobbs Road, Glenwood, MD 21738 (no bureau E-mail requests!). Bernie is the QSL Manager for all QSOs with A61AJ (what ever date, mode or band). By the way, the operator was Walter, DJ6QT.

All stations needing a card from BI2J are to send them direct to Mac, W3HC, and not to China. If you send them to China, Mac will have to mail a supply of cards to Alan so he can answer them. This takes more time and creates a greater expense. This mistake was made on the BI3H, BI4C, BI5Z and the BI5P cards. Mac will place an order for the BI2J cards as soon as he receives the photograph and the details from Alan.

QSLs for EZ8CW and EZ3A. Vit, EZ8CW, states that he doesn't have a QSL Manager and QSLs for him (EZ8CW) and the club station EZ3A should be sent direct only to: Vitaly Dotsenko, P.O.Box 73, Ashgabat, 744020, Turkmenistan.

By the time you read this, the YP1W DXpedition will be over. Activity was from Sacalinu Mare Island (IOTA EU-183) in the Black Sea close to the Danube Delta. OPDX was told that this "island is a virgin and a wildlife Romanian territory, part of the Biosphere Reservation "Danube Delta". The DXpedition was organized by the Romanian Radio Amateur Federation (FRR) and by Pit, YO3JW. Operators were YO3JW/Pit, YO3FWC/ Ciprian, YO9FJW/Ionut, YO3FLR/Cristi and possibly others. Mark, KM6HB, reports that he has received an E-mail from Bill, NC1L, at the DXCC desk stating that his documentation for his ZK1AHB operation to South Cook Island (July 10-18th, 2000) has been accepted by the ARRL for DXCC credit. QSLs have been received from the printer and are being mailed out daily. Bureau requests will be handled as they are received.

SPECIAL CANADIAN PREFIXES AND ACTIVITY
Look for a special prefix to be activated to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the end of the British and French capitals of Nova Scotia. The Industry Canada approved the prefix XM1 for VE1's and XL1 for VA1's, and is also available for all Canadian Radio Amateur operators residing within the boundaries of Annapolis County. Their operation was authorized and will be valid from October 27th through November 27, 2000.

The special callsign VC5C has been assigned to Todd Bendtsen, VE5MX, to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada. This callsign is valid between October 27-30th, 2000 only.

The special event callsign VB2R as been authorized to be used by Carleton Styan, VE3BY, to commemorate the 100th Anniversary birth of Mr. E.S. Rogers Sr. inventor and creator of "Rogers Batteryless Radio". This operation is valid from October 21st through November 5th, 2000. The station will be active in the CQ WW SSB Contest (Zone 2).

SPECIAL EVENT
Look for the special event callsign MB2HFC to be used during the International HF and IOTA Convention, October 13-15th.

SPECIAL EVENT
During the year 2000 the "Signal Corps of the Australian Army (Royal Australian Signals)" celebrates their 75th anniversary of its formation. To mark the occasion, former and current members of the corps will operate VI5RAS throughout November from various locations within Australia. QSL direct with SASE to VK5FV or via the Bureau.

SLIM ALERTS!!!!
A station being active as 3W1A on 28495 kHz this past week stating to QSL via N6HK is a SLIM. Steve, N6HK, states, "The guy's a phoney. I'm not the manager for any station."

Gene, TZ6YV, reported hearing a station using the callsign TZ1GH who was advising people to QSL via the Bureau! According to Gene, the call TZ1GH has not been issued, and additionally Mali has no QSL Bureau.

V4, NEVIS ISLAND
Doc, W9NY, will be active again as V47NS, October 26-30th. He will be in the CQWW SSB Contest as a 10 meter Single Band entry (or possible 20/15 meters single band entry). QSL via W9NY.

V6, MICRONESIA
Due to freight schedules, the V63DX operation date was shifted a little. Shoji, JA7HMZ, will operate from Pohpei Island from October 27th through November 2nd. He will be Single Operator/All Band/ High Power entry in the CQWW DX SSB Contest. He received the callsign V6A for the contest. ZD9, TRISTAN DA CUNHA. Bob's, G3ZEM, activity as ZD9ZM has ended. On Saturday, September 23rd, Bob and Karen finally left the island and are headed to Capetown. All the equipment was safely loaded onto the ship, including the slightly bent Titanex vertical. Bob E-mailed the final ZD9ZM log by satellite from the Agulhas today as promised. The final tally is 20,538 QSOs, and the full log has now been uploaded to the ZD9ZM log search page available at:

ZK2, NIUE
Bill, W7TVF, will be active again from November 19th through December 10th as ZK2VF. Operations will be on 160-6 meters. Priority will be given to Europe, Africa, and South America on 160 and 80 meters during their grayline. Plenty of time will be spent on all bands for anyone who needs a QSO. A 847 will be used as a beacon on six meters all the time that he is active, so if six opens he will be QRT on HF until six meters closes. The six meter beacon will be on 50.115 MHz. Bill will be operating from the "Beautiful Namukulu Motel" with Alpha power and good antennas. QSL info is the same as last time. Preparations continue at an accelerating pace for the Kingman Reef DXpedition in October. The ICOM IC756Pro radios have arrived in Honolulu, as have the diesel generators. The antennas (Force 12 and Cushcraft), amplifiers (Alpha and our own) and cables (Davis RF) are on the way. The motor schooner Machias is being prepared for the journey---she departs 8 days earlier than us. Site planning is almost complete.

Bob had a final fling on CW, SSB and RTTY as promised, putting another 1,000 QSOs in the log. On Saturday 23rd September, Bob and Karen finally left the island and after two days sailing are making good progress for Capetown. All the equipment was safely loaded on to the ship, including the slightly bent Titanex vertical.=20

Bob emailed the final ZD9ZM log by satellite from the Agulhas today as promised. The final tally is 20,538 QSOs and the full log has now been uploaded to the ZD9ZM log search page available at

For the most part, the pile-ups were well behaved and there was some great operating. However, Bob provided an interesting insight into an unfortunate part of the ZD9ZM operation:

"I have seen all manner of operating standards and styles whilst down here, just as you would expect, but one particular station really ****** me off. I can easily forgive the guy who isn't slick and ends up calling on top of the feller I'm working, but this particular chap knew exactly what he was doing. He was a very competent operator, who could figure out with astonishing accuracy where I was listening and would then dive in and call incessantly, despite me already being in QSO. No amount of pleading on my part would persuade him to stand by until I had finished with whoever I was working. He didn't do this just once, but several times on different bands. On more than one occasion, I was forced to abandon my QSO in order to work him instead, he was so insistent. What an ******** and I have deleted him from the log altogether. Who was he? I am aware that your efforts to verify receipt of your valuable QSL cards are often unsuccessful. This is due in part to the way the USPO handles receipts included in large quantities of mail. SASEs sent with your application are not seen by DXCC until the application is actually processed. This is generally too late to be of use to you.

I am pleased to announce that the ARRL will be installing a new computer platform. This will allow us to make some improvements in the way the DXCC program works. By the end of the year 2001, we should be able to generate an e-mail receipt automatically for each DXCC application received. Until that time, I am going to try to respond manually. This requires spending some time looking up e-mail addresses, but I think it is worth the effort, and I hope you do too!

September has seen much activity in the IOTA 2000 Programme with over 50 premium counters being activated in the Americas and the Caribbean.

Remember there are no charges for the IOTA 2000 awards and QSL cards are not required. Please do not send your applications until January 2001 and note that the certificates will not be serially-numbered. At least 10 stations have already achieved the 900 point level thus qualifying for the Gold Certificate.
