EDITOR'S NOTES:
WOW! What a week for DXing. A lot of exciting activity is
expected in the coming week and weekend due to the CQ World-Wide DX Phone
Contest, October 28-29th. Also, do not forget about the Kingman Reef
DXpedition and the German DXpedition to Eritrea. Have fun! P.S. If someone
wants to put together a nice CQWW SSB Contest List of all the operations
for me (ASCII format, no graphics, keep it under 80 characters wide),
I will send it out before next weekend to all OPDX InterNet Subscribers.
3D, FIJI
"The DX News Letter" reports that Ron, ZL1AMO/3D2RW, is once
again active until October 30th. He is expected to activate Mana (OC-121)
for one week, but this may be over with by the time you read this. QSL
via ZL1AMO.
3D2, CONWAY REEF (Update)
Another press release by Hrane, YT1AD, was
sent out with more details on their DXpedition. The list of operators
are as follows so far: Hrane/YT1AD, Rasa/YU1RL, Miki/YU1AU (or Ratko/YU1NR),
Rale/YT6A, Dragan/Z32AU, Mome/Z32ZM and Ray/YS1RR (still not confirmed).
Earlier in the week there were some concerns raised on the group's
operation during the hurricane season. Hrane reported the following:
"This year the huricane season will be starting 10 to 15 of Nov. 2000
and will finish at about 1 Jan. 2001 so later on, in the middle of January
the sea is in calm again. The captain told me that after the Christmas
season the weather is ok for dx epedition." Anyway, the press release
states that the team will fly from LA to Fiji in the first days of
February and expect to arrive in Fiji earlier in the morning. They
will depart in their boat from the Fiji Port "Pacifik Harbour" on
the afternoon of February 5th. The team will all join together at the
airport Nanadi. They will then take a boat trip at sea, which is quite
long, for about 40 hours. They expect to arrive on Conway about 4:00 to
6:00 AM (local time) on February 7th in the morning. Hrane states that
the boat "is big, 20 meters long and has 10 sleeping places, and we will
have profesional kitchen." They will then start to assemble antennas,
towers, tents, generators..etc... etc., and will try very quickly to have
the first station on the air. They plan to have all 3 stations active and
working at all times around the clock until February 15th. After the
operation, they will return to Fiji where they will stay for 3 days on
the island to operate. They will return to L.A. on February 19th. All
the operators, with exception of YU1RL and YT1AD, will go back to Europe
from L.A., and YU1RL and YT1AD will go to El Salvador to operate in the
ARRL Contest from YS1RR QTH.
4M, VENEZUELA

4U1VIC is a separate country on the DARC's WAE list, and thus a multiplier
in the CQ's contests. QSL cards will be sent via the OE bureau. If you need
a direct reply, please send your card with SAE and return postage to:

to travel to and stay in Thimphu, Bhutan, arriving December 1st and depart-
ing about December 9th. Charly states that he has paid the extra fee for
permission to run 1 kw on all bands. The two operators will have a tribander
(and maybe 2 more and a WARC-bander depending on repairs) and wire antennas.
Charly states, "These are totally self-financed trips, so no web site, no
huge 160 meters antennas, no E-mail, and so on, but we plan to have a lot of
fun." Charly's callsign will be A52UD (Yani's was not mentioned). Charly
will be on SSB and CW, emphasizing the low bands, and Jani plans RTTY.
QSL requests for A52UD go to K4VUD (direct with SASE is faster, bureau
replies will be very slow); Jani will announce his separate QSL address
and policy. Anyone still wanting to join the group must act very fast

SPECIAL EVENT (Extinguishing of "Last Oil Well")
On August 2, 1990, the

end leaving behind an environmental devastation from which Kuwait is still
suffering. The extinguinshing of the last oil well marked a great event

FINLAND FORMULA ONE RACING TEAM
Watch out for OH0BH and OH2BH,
plus JW5E firing up from Svalbard
Surely you're familiar with Formula One, the world's premiere motor sport.
Thus, you will no doubt recall our 1999 F1 racing approach in CQWW SSB,
with Jeff Steinman, N5TJ piloting EA8BH to new heights in single-op,
all-band scoring http://www.qsl.net/oh1noa/ccf2000/formula1.htm.
Martti J. Laine, OH2BH, spokesman for the team, informs the contesting community of the following:
"In the wake of last year's success, we are adopting the same approach to test the F1 concept at continental and sub-regional levels while returning to the world arena only for CQWW CW."
Here, the team has been working hard to build competitive sites for the current racing season. Ilkka Korpela, OH1WZ will be piloting the OH0BH site on Aland Islands, targeting a new European all-band record, while Timo Klimoff, OH1NOA is going to be at the controls at OH2BH, aiming for an all-time high from mainland Finland.
Ilkka Korpela, 32, is no stranger to serious contesting. His skills and strategic thinking are well recognized in Finland, and he has scored well in several domestic races. He has studied and experimented with several dual-station configurations; hence the OH0BH site now features a full-fledged dual-radio/beam setup under Ilkka's command.
See Ilkka's homepage at http://www.helsinki.fi/~korpela/amateur.htm.
Timo Klimoff, 32, secretary and editor-in-charge of Contest Club Finland, scored extremely well (placing 5th) in WRTC-2000. He is used to racing at OH1AF/OH1F, and he has a sharp eye for goodly multiplier runs. Timo is really looking forward to the contest from the OH2BH site with multiple-direction arrays, and is determined to take full advantage of the F1 team experience.
Check out Timo's homepage at http://www.qsl.net/oh1noa/.
Martti further comments: "The contesting community is encouraged to call in and provide these runners with a meaningful playing ground by giving our pilots full support for their projected QSO and multiplier levels. Both stations are fully equipped for quick band change following your check-in".
It will be interesting to see how this approach works on continental (Europe) and national (Finland) levels.
This year's support team features OH1MA, OH1RY, OH2BE, OH2BK, OH2DT, OH2HE, OH2MM, OH2PM, OH2QM, OH2TA, OH3QK, OH5LF, OH6RM, OH7HAL, OH7MA, OH7NA, OH8QD, OH8SR, Yaesu Musen Co. Ltd. and our site people: Bengt (OH0), Ilkka, Lauri and Touko.
Due to a cancelled Far East operation, both Martti, OH2BH and Pekka, OH2TA will be participating in the CQWW SSB contest by joining the JW5E team in Svalbard and making a double multiplier available for this year's event together with Mathias, LA5NM/JW5NM and Ragnar, LA7FD/JW7FD and their team.

Subject: Fw: Five Star DXers go to D68 - Bulletin No.2
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 12:06:15 +0100
MIME-Version: 1.0
Site Survey
Firstly, many of you will have heard Don G3OZF operating as D68/G3OZF while
on a survey trip for the D68C operation. Don did some invaluable work in
getting everything lined up for our operation, and also reported that the
pile-ups were huge, despite the fact that he was running barefoot to a
simple vertical. We can only imagine how things will be when we are there
with high power and Yagis plus phased verticals and four-squares! It was
quite clear to Don that there is lots of demand for D68 throughout the world
on all bands; there is also great interest in the low bands in particular,
which is echoed in many of the e-mails we have received since the first
bulletin went out.
Web Page
The D68C Web Page is now up and running, and looking great. Check the site
at www.dxbands.com/comoros
You will see that the site also sports our DXpedition logo, a coelacanth which, of course, is a rare fish, thought to have been extinct for millions of years, but rediscovered some years ago in this part of the Indian Ocean.
Sponsorship
We are delighted to have Yaesu on board as a major sponsor. This will allow
the group to take six state-of-the-art high power Yaesu stations (FT-1000MP
Mk.Vs plus Quadra VL-1000 linears) as the basis for the group's operations.
We will also take two FT-920s and two FT-900s. In addition, we are pleased
to say that Force 12 antennas will be used on most of the high bands. The
D68C team chose Force 12 for their combination of light weight, ruggedness,
and excellent on-air performance. Similarly, Titanex vertical antennas will
be used on the low bands, based on their ease of assembly and light weight
combined with first-rate performance. Nevada, one of the UK's leading
amateur radio dealers, has also weighed in early, with help with a number of
ancillary items of equipment.
Further sponsorship is sought, especially from DX groups and foundations, to
help with the high cost of shipping some 3 tonnes of equipment to D68, along
with a number of other logistical matters. Sponsorship is being co-ordinated
by the following:
US: Wes W3WL (blamboley@aol.com)
Japan: Taizo JA3AER (arakawa@sakuranet.co.jp)
Rest of the World: Steve G4JVG (g4jvg@cwcom.net)
Our treasurer John G3WGV (g3wgv@aol.com) will be pleased to accept
donations.
Six Metres
We will be making a major effort on 6 metres with two stacked 5 element
beams located very close to the sea with an excellent take-off to all parts
of the world. Mike G3SED, Kazu JA1RJU and Rob PE9PE are all six metre
specialists. We hope for great results on the magic band.
Pilots
As with our 9M0C DXpedition, we will again have pilot stations, who will act
as our channel to you, the world's DXers, passing information both ways.
Once again, we are delighted that Martin G3ZAY will act as chief pilot, with
particular responsibility for Europe and Africa.
New Team Members
Since the last bulletin, the following have joined the DXpedition team:
Tim G4VXE, a technology wizz, Yoichi JP1NWZ, an all-rounder, and Rob PE9PE.
Rob will be especially welcome to 6 metre, VHF and satellite operators. He
will be ensuring that D68C is available via the current range of amateur
satellites.
Key Dates
The next key date is 24 November, when a sea-going container leaves the UK
for Moroni. The container will be filled with all the antennas, co-ax,
masts, tools, radios, computers etc.
And, to remind you, the expedition itself will take place over the period of roughly 8th to 28th February 2001.
Look out for ... Future bulletins will be issued at roughly monthly intervals until our departure. Look out for further information on team members, a competition for those working D68C, details of some significant technical innovations which we plan to have up and working for the DXpedition, and much more. If you are not on my mailing list and wish to be, then please send me an e-mail.

Subject: Bhutan op in December

Hello DXers...
Two hams plan to activate Bhutan A5 in early December 2000.
Both Yani (9M6US, YB0US) and I (K4VUD, HS0ZCW, 9N7UD, V26V, XW1UD) have paid all our fees and airplane tickets in advance to travel to and stay in Thimphu, Bhutan arriving December 1 and departing about December 9. I have paid the extra fee for permission to run 1KW on all bands. We will have a tribander (and maybe 2 more and a WARC bander depending on repairs) and wire antennas. These are totally self-financed trips, so no web site, no huge 160m ants, no e-mail, and so on, but we plan to have a lot of fun.
My call will be A52UD. I will be on SSB and CW, emphasizing the low bands, and Jani plans RTTY, too. I will try calling upper bands SSB out of the American phone band, listening up into the Am. band so that all Am. jammers must at least also xmit out-of-band in order to police or jam me. Also, this strategy should make it absolutely clear THAT I AM LISTENING UP. Of course, 40m SSB will be split op, too. I have 160m path data and will make special efforts to comply with that and also call on the hour on dear ole 160m CW. No sked requests, pse.
QSL requests for A52UD go to K4VUD (direct with sase is faster, buro replies vy slow... hint hint); Jani will announce his separate QSL adr and policy. Anyone still wanting to join me must act very fast as a month lead time is likely needed for this kind of trip.
Pse don't forget ham radio is a hobby. Joy to all,
de K4VUD Charly
