3C, EQUATORIAL GUINEA
Martin, 3C5J, continues to be very active from
the oil platform in Equatorial Guinea, especially on 15 and 20 meters
CW/SSB. It is great to see that he is an active operator, but he would
please many if he could operate from the mainland for a few days so it
wpuld count for DXCC. His main activity seems to be around 1300-1630z
and again between 0530 and 0830z. QSL via MW0BRO.
CF2/CG2/VC2, CANADA (Special Prefixes)
In celebration of the 50th
anniversary of the founding of the "Radioamateurs du Quebec, Inc." (RAQI),
Canadians have obtained from Industry Canada permission for all VA2/VE2s
to use a special commemorative prefix. Effective from June 15, 2001, to
July 15, 2001, all holders of callsigns with VE2 prefixes may use the
special prefix CG2, and holders of VA2 prefixed callsigns may use the
special prefix CF2. Daniel A. Lamoureux, VE2KA, president of the RAQI,
also reports that they have obtained from Industry Canada a special
callsign which can also be used between June 15th and July 15th. This
callsign is VC2A, which can be used by an individual or group. Look for
this callsign probably in contests. For more details and the latest RAQI

CQ AWARD SPONSORED
Ed, NT4TT (ex-AH2BE/KH9, KB6DAW/KH2/KH9, HL9MM,
8P9GI and HZ1AB), announced at the Dayton HamVention that starting this
year in memory of those who loved Ed, W2MIG, he was sponsoring the CQ
WPX Mulit Single Asia Plaque. Ed considered "MIG" a friend and appreciated
all the help he gave him working the Carribean while he was out on some
of Ed's (NT4TT) DXpeditions. Ed also sponsors the CQWW Multi Asia Plaque

HS, THAILAND
Charly, W4VUD, continues to be active from here as HS0ZCW.
He was heard this past weekend in the CQ WPX Contest. However, he reported
this past weekend to "Please tell everyone...NO OPERATION ALLOWED ON THE
WARC BANDS IN THAILAND. I am still getting requests for WARC contacts.

ILLW/2001 WEEKEND (Update)
Mike, GM4SUC, reminds everyone that the Inter-
national Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend will take place from 0001z on
Saturday, August 18th through 2359z on Sunday, August 19th. Already over
100 stations have confirmed their participation from either a lighthouse,
lightship or maritime beacon. You can find the list of stations at:
IOTA NEWS
AS-147. Takeshi, JI3DST, will be active from Okushiri Island (Okushiri-
cho Okushiri-gun Hokkaidou) starting 0700z, June 2nd through
0200z, June 5th. His callsign will be JI3DST/8. Activity will
be on 17/15/12/10/6/2 meters SSB. He requests to QSL ONLY via
the bureau. Direct QSL will be mailed later.
EU-007. Sean/EI4GK and Declan/EI9HQ hope to operate from the Blasket Islands between June 1st and 3rd using the call signs EJ4GK and EJ9HQ. Operations will be mainly SSB on all bands 80-10 meters. QSL to home calls direct or via the Bureau.
EU-017. Stromboli Island will be activated by a group of Italians from May 31st through June 3rd using the special callsign ID9S. Operations will be on 160/80/40/20/15/10/6 meters in addition to 2 meters and 70 cm. Other reference numbers for this island are: I.I.A. (Italian Island Award) - ME 16, W.A.I.P. (Worked All Italian Provinces) - MESSINA (ME), and WW Locator - JM78. QSL Manager is IZ0EUI.
EU-037. Guenter, DL5CX, will be signing SM7/DL5CX from the Kalmar District, June 9-16th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters CW/SSB/PSK31/RTTY. QSL via home call.
EU-174. Frank, ON4AAC, reports that they will use the special callsign J48T on the Greek island Thassos now through June 3rd.
EA-184. A group of Finnish opeators will be active from Hailuoto Island as OH6AW/8 between June 29th and July 5th. Operations will be on HF, 6m, 2m and 70cm. Operators are Pertti/OH6HJE, Jarno/OH6NJ, Markku/OH6UV and Juha/OH6MTG.
NA-057. Ray, WA9YYY, will be operating as HR6/WA9YYY from Roatan Island, Honduras, from June 16-23rd. His primary bands will be 20 and 12 meters, mostly CW. His rig will be a FT-900 (and a memory keyer) to wire antennas up in the palm trees. QSL to his home callsign; bureau cards are OK.
OC-046. Kaoru, JA3MCA, will be on Tahiti from May 27-29th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters CW/SSB. QSL via JA3MCA.
J49, CRETE
Bob, I2WIJ, reports that he will be active from here July
23rd through August 6th. He will also participate in the 2001 IOTA Contest
as J49R as a 24H CW 100w DXpedition entry. Activity outside the contest
will be mostly SSB and on WARC bands. He hopes to be able to have a 160m
dipole up, even if conditions in July may not be so good for that band.

JW, SVALBARD ISLANDS (Reminder/Rare IOTA)
Remember to look for JW0PK
next weekend (June 1-9th) to be active from a rare Artic IOTA in the
Spitsbergen's Coastal Islands (EU-063). The island is called Prins Karls
Forland. Activity will be on all bands and modes. For more details, please
refer to OPDX.509. QSL via SP5DRH. QSLs via the bureau are ok. If you prefer
direct, QSL via: Mr. Jacek Kubiak, P.O.Box 4, 00-957 Warszawa - Poland.
LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY
The Nieuwpoort Lighthouse (BEL-004) will be activated
for the very first time during the coming "Lighthouse-Lightship" weekend
(August 18-19th), by ON4ADN, ON4CJK, ON5FP, ON6HH, ON1DPX and some other
operators. They have been granted the special callsign OS4LHN. Activity
will be on all bands (80-10 meters) mainly SSB and CW. QSL goes to ON4ADN,
either direct or through the UBA bureau. There will be a multi-color QSL.
All replies to direct QSLs will be posted in Nieuwpoort and will bear
the special "Nieuwpoort Lighthouse" postmark wich can be considered as
a real collector's item. QSL Manager Geert, ON4ADN, states that he only
needs reply postage, no envelope, and of course your address.
OH0, ALAND ISLAND
DL5FF/OH0JWL (Peter) and DJ2PJ/OH0JWH (Hadi) will be
in their log cabin on the Aland Islands (in JP30TF), from June 10-22nd.
Activity will include all bands, CW, PSK31, RTTY, and SSB. Special attention
will be given to 50 MHz with 90 watts into a 6 element yagi. QSL only to
their German callsigns, NOT via the OH0 Bureau!
OJ0, MARKET REEF
A united team of OH and JA operators are planning an
operation from here during the 2001 IARU Contest. Activity will be from
July 12-16th. Operators listed are: OH1VR/Seppo, OH1NX/Timo, OH1TX/Jaakko,
OH0RJ/Lasse, JH1ARJ/Massy, JP1NWZ/Yo, OE1ZKC/JH4RHF/Jun and JR4PMX/Hiro.
The contest callsign will be OJ0U. Outside of the contest operators will
use OJ0/homecall (before and after the contest). Three stations will be
active with activity on 160-6 meters CW/SSB/RTTY (possibly SSTV). QSL
Manager for OJ0U will be JP1NWZ. For all others, QSL via their home
callsign for other individual callsign.
P5 PIRATE
A station signing P5DX was having a real fun time this week
with many individuals chasing him/her on 40/20/15 meters CW. Save your
green stamps on this one!
QSL INFO AND NEWS
Last week OPDX received a request to find out, "What is the QSL status
of FT5WH?" According to Gil, F5NOD, a F6KDF Club member and Chairman
of the "Lyon DX Gang" Association, states all QSLs that were received
direct have been sent (a long time ago...). They received a batch of
monthly FT5WH QSL requests, and they answered them. A big batch of bureau
QSLs had also been sent some months ago. So, the log is still open and
you can resubmit a QSL if you didn't receive yours. QSL via F6KDF.
QSL 4G1A, which was active in the CQ WPX Contest, to VE7DP or DX1CW (the CW Philippines in Manila).

Javi, LU5FF, participated in the CQ WPX CW Contest as LQ0F on 10/15/20 meters. QSL via LU5FF.
NOT THE QSL MANAGER. Silvano, I2YSB, reports that he has been receiving QSLs for 3D2AG/p and Z21CS. He is NOT the QSL Manager for these stations. QSL both these stations to their CBA.
OG3M/0 was active on all bands in the CQ WPX CW Contest from Aland Islands. All QSLs will be sent via the bureau, no card needed. If a direct QSL is wanted, send request via OH1VR's home address: Ojakatu 3A18, 33100 Tampere, Finland.
OH0B was active from Aland Island in the CQ WPX CW Contest as a Multi- Single category. There were three stations on the air manned by young operators and old-timers. Operators were OH2BH, OH2JTE, OH2MM, OH2PM, OH2TA and OH8SR. QSL OH0B via OH1BV.
OH0V was active on all bands in the CQ WPX CW Contest. QSL via OH6LI: Jukka Klemola, Aarontie 5, 31400 SOMERO, Finland or via bureau.
Igor, RZ9OU (Asiatic Russia - CQ zone 18), was active as RG9O in the CQ WPX CW Contest as an All Band/Low Power category. QSL via home call. Bureau cards are OK, send direct QSL to: Igor Naumov, P.O.Box 69, Novosibirsk-90, 630090, Russia.

RUSSIAN MOUNTAIN DXPEDITION
Oleg, UA9UAX, reports that operators
Vladimir/EY8HB, EY8AV, Nodir/EY8MM and a group of mountaineers are
planning to be active/work from one of the anonymous mountains on the
Pamirs (near Sarez lake), July 3rd. They will only be active for ONE
hour from the peak (5800-5900m above sea level). Operations will be on
SSB on 40 or 20 meters using an IC-706MK2G. INTERESTING NOTE: After the
expedition, the mountain will be named "Radio Amateur's Peak"!
SILENT KEY
George Vernadakis, SV1AB (ex F9QN), became a "SK" on May
24th, 2001. George was born in Paris in the twenties and stayed in
Marseilles, France, as F9QN until the mid-fifties. Then, he settled in
Athens, Greece, as SV1AB and became a pionneer and a well known DXman on
RF and mainly on VHF/UHF all modes and ways. He was an excellent technician
as well and a founder of the "Radio Amateur Association of Greece" (RAAG:
a IARU member), which he presided over during several years. OPDX and its
readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to his family and
friends.
SPECIAL ACTIVITY ON LF
The RSGB LF Group reports: "Listeners may be
aware that the UK Royal Navy are celebrating the Centenary of the Royal
Navy Submarine service with a gathering of UK and overseas submarines in
the Clyde. This year is also the 75th anniversary of operation of the GBR
transmitter (Rugby). As part of this celebration 'It is hoped' that a
special A1A Morse code transmission from the GBR long wave transmitter
will be made. For those with an interest in VLF reception please listen
to 16kHz (yes 16 not 60kHz!) on Tuesday, May 29th, 2001, at 1200 GMT
and 1345 GMT."
TX0, CHESTERFIELS ISLAND
It has been reported that an Oceania DX Group
is planning a DXpedition to this newest DXCC entity later this year,
possibly in September. The plan is to have at least five stations active
24 hours a day on 160-6 meters CW, SSB and RTTY. Apparently, Bill Horner,
VK4FW, is heading up the group and is looking for operators. If interested,

UR, UKRAINE (New UIA)
Operators Andy/UX2RY, Alex/UY2RO, George/UY2RA,
Irina/UY2RY, Witaly/UX2RV, Yuri/UT0RW, George/UY5XE, Eugen/US5UM, Vlad/U5UG,
Vlad/UR4UKV and others will operate as UR4RZA/p from Pravednyi Island
(not IOTA, UIA DN 051 [newone]) on June 14-17th. Activity is expected
to take place on 80-10 meters CW/SSB and also the satellites. QSL via
UX2RY either direct (Andy Asriyanz, P.O.Box 14, Slavutich-3, Kiev obl.,
07100, Ukraine) or through the bureau.
VIETNAM PIRATE
Tom, 3W7CW, has confirmed that his callsign has been
recently used by a PIRATE (i.e. on May 19th, 2001 on 18073 kHz, starting
around 2200z). Tom has been QRT for the past several weeks due to a
relocation from Hanoi to Saigon. His antennas at the new QTH will be
ready in/around September-October. Tom will change his prefix from 3W7
to 3W5, so look out for him as 3W5CW.
ZONE 2 (UPDATE)
Nenad, VE3EXY, is now active as VE3EXY/2. He started a
day late than expected, however, he will be staying a day later than
expected (May 29th, 1200z).

Finances Of WRTC2002 and Great Success at Dayton Hamvention 2001.
The World Radiosport Team Championship, WRTC, the "Olympics" of international Amateur Radio contesting, will take place in Finland in July 2002. WRTC 2002 is being organized jointly by Contest Club Finland (CCF) and The Finnish Amateur Radio League (SRAL). These periodic WRTC events bringing together over fifty (50) teams comprised of the "Best of the Best" contest operators from around the world for a week of super-charged operating skills competitions. The WRTC is organized around an on-the-air competition among two-person teams. By bringing the competitors together in one geographical area and providing equal operating conditions (antennas, power etc), the variables normally associated with a radio contest are neutralized, thus the operating skills are emphasized.
Finland, arguably the world=92s leading communications technology powerhouse, has several unique and innovative technical projects underway. These projects will result in technology being employed during the games that virtually insure that a worldwide Amateur Radio audience can participate "on the air" with the WRTC competitors during this exciting 24-hour operating event while they also watch the results on the world-web almost on a real-time basis.
Financing an undertaking as large as a World Radiosport Team Championship is a tremendous challenge. These competitions are expensive to put on and are totally dependent upon financial support from thousands of individual contributors and a limited number of commercial sources. WRTC2002 will be more expensive than any precious competition since modern Finland is a rather expensive country. The Amateur Radio operators in Finland, naturally, have assumed that a great deal of support will be forthcoming from the Amateur Radio community throughout the world. The WRTC2002 budget is calculated to be USD 200K. The Organizing Committee was able to raise USD 100K before committing to the event. Dedicated efforts to raise the remaining USD 100K are now underway.
One of the first such efforts took place May 17-20 at the Dayton Hamvention 2001. The renowned Dayton Ohio event regularly brings together about 25,000 Amateur Radio operators from all over the world with interests in all aspects of the hobby. Large number of those in attendance are always Contesters and DXers, without a doubt some of the most active and energetic individuals in the hobby. Many of these Contesters and DXers, some previous competitors in past WRTC events, volunteered to work along side the WRTC 2002 USA Representatives manning various fund raising activities this year. We are pleased to announce that the Contesters and DXers who came together in Dayton took time out of their socializing to dig into their wallets and made generous financial contributions totaling over USD 5000. Those dollars provide a great start down the path to obtaining the tens of thousands of dollars still needed for the competition in Finland just a little over a year away.
