The tragedy and terrorist act that took place
in New York, September 11, 2001, will have an effect on everyone in years
to come, especially the future youth of the world. Modern man (I use the
term loosely after what has happen) has provided the world (by TV broadcasts)
imagines that were horrifying. It is hard to believe that individuals would
go to such great lengths to create such destruction and death. However, if
the individuals who plotted this terrible act of terrorism think they
have damaged the "American Spirit/Patriotism", they better think otherwise.
Over the last several days, after reading my E-mail and messages from the
DX Reflectors, I was "truly touched" by my fellow DXers/Amateurs from other
countries expressing their condolences and outrage of this terrorist act.
If anything, this tragedy has strenghtend the "American Spirit/Patriotism"
and has bought the world closer together. Check out the following web site:

3B8, MAURITIUS
Jack/PA3BAG and Hans/PA0VHA will be active as 3B8/PA3BAG
and 3B8/PA0VHA from October 1-16th. Their activity will be on RTTY, PSK31,
CW and SSB on all bands including the WARC bands. QSL Manager for this

9K2USA, KUWAIT
Effective September 15th, the Kuwait Amateur Radio Society
(KARS), in conjunction with the Kuwait Ministry of Communications, has
authorized the use of the callsign 9K2USA. This single callsign 9K2USA
(NINE KILO TWO UNITED STATES of AMERICA) will be heard on all bands and
all modes and will be used by "all Kuwait Amateurs" simultaneously. As a
small token of the sympathy and support for the people of the United States
from the citizens of Kuwait, and as an expression of deep condolence,
the callsign will be used until the end of September. The Kuwait Amateur
Radio Society (KARS) will be doing the QSL chores. They will put together
a common database, and all QSLs will be via 9K2RA.
9L, SIERRA LEONE
Elmer, 9L1DX, a doctor working in Sierra Leone, is
expected to be there for the next two or three years. During his spare
time, look for him on 80/40/20/15/10 meters SSB. He was active during
the last week on 15 meters (between 21253 and 21300 kHz) at various times
(around 0030z, 1100z and 2345z). QSL via EA4CEN.
9M6, EAST MALAYSIA
Hein, DL2OBF, will be at the Hillview Gardens Resort
for this year's CQ WW DX SSB Contest. He will take part as 9M6A in the
Single Op/All Band/Assisted category. His operating time outside the
contest will be limited; some CW with a focus on the WARC bands is
possible. QSL via N2OO.
A2, BOSTWANA
Mako/JA1OEM and Toshi/JA1ELY will operate from Botswana
during the following schedule. Mako will operate between September 21st
and October 17th. His activity will be on 160-10 meters, SSB (limited
English)/CW. Toshi will operate between September 21-28th. His activity
will be on 80-10 meters SSB/CW/RTTY. They don't know what their callsigns
are, possibly A25/JA1OEM and A25/JA1ELY. QSL to homecall.

A5, BHUTAN
Dr. Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, informs OPDX (in a long press release
which will be sent to all OPDX InterNet Subscriber as an additional
bulletin) that October 26, 2001, marks the inaugural day for the Bhutan
Amateur Radio Club (BARC). The officers of the new club are:

To celebrate the formation of the Bhutan Amateur Radio Club, A50A will be active as a multi-multi entry in the CQWW SSB Contest October 27-28th. A team of U.S. operators will be helping the licensed Bhutanese hams learn to operate in a contest environment from the Bhutan Ham Centre, operated by Yeshey Dorji, A51AA. Before and after the contest the U.S. hams will concentrate on the low bands, WARC bands and new modes. Expect A50A to be active in future contests and special events in Bhutan. DXCC NEWS
Wayne Mills, N7NG/1, Manager of the ARRL's Membership Services
Department, reports: "Effective immediately, all applications for DXCC
credit that are postmarked by September 30th, will be eligible for inclusion
in the next Annual List. Applications do not need to be actually received
in Newington by that date. All mail must show clear evidence of the posting
date, or date of receipt by carriers other than the world postal system.
This change should alleviate most problems arising from mail delays
currently being reported. Applications will still be listed on the web
as we receive them."
FM, MARTINIQUE
Operators and members of the Pordenone Gangsters Club,
Andy/IV3BTY, Luke/IV3JVJ, Dan/IV3TDM, Leon/FM5DN, Dennis/FM5GU and
Lucien/FM5WD will be active as FM5GU in the CQWW SSB Contest as a

FO0/A, AUSTRAL ISLANDS
Jon/WB8YJF and Leo/K8PYD will be active from
the Austral Islands, September 24th through October 3rd. There will be
a heavy emphasis on RTTY. They will also be active on CW with some SSB.
Their activity will include an entry in the CQWW RTTY Contest. Callsigns
will be announced later (possibly FO0SEV and FO0FRY). Operations will be
on 80-10 meters. They will use WB8YJF's callsign in the contest. QSLs go
to home callsign direct, if possible (It is MUCH faster).
IOTA NEWS
AS-147. Takeshi, JE3DST, will be active from Okushiri Island (Okushiri-
cho Okushiri-gun Hokkaidou) from September 22-25th, as JI3DST/8.
Activity will be on 17/15/12/10/6 meters SSB. QSL via the
Bureau ONLY (Please don't send QSL by Air mail.).
EU-128. Karl, DL1ZU, will activate the Schleswig-Holstein State East Group as DL1ZU/p, September 19th through October 7th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters on CW and PSK31. QSL via the homecall/bureau.
NA-136. John, N1OLO, informs OPDX that due to new restrictions placed on them by the island's owner, station N1EV will only be operating from Sheffield Island on September 30th, 1400-2100z. They will be operating on 15, 20, and 40 meters SSB. The modes CW/RTTY/PSK31 will be operated on a secondary basis. Please check the DX cluster for frequency and mode.
JT, MONGOLIA (Trip Cancelled)
Ken, K4ZW, reports that "given the tragic
events in the United States this week and the certainty of further action,
the uncertainty of air travel out of Washington D.C., and the desires of
our families, Karl/K4YT and I have decided to postpone our journey to
Mongolia. It is our desire to complete this project in the near future
once conditions dictate that it is prudent to do so. For those of you
who have provided support for this effort, all the items have been
procured and will be used towards their stated intent. Details regarding
the rescheduling of our trip will be provided once they are known."
KC4, ANTARCTICA
Jim, WA2EUJ, who was active as KC4USV and working at
McMurdo Station on their radio communications gear, indicated that he
would be on the air as much as possible during the next few months. Jim
is just one of several operators at KC4USV and states his QSL Manager is
K1IED. Station KC4USV has been heard on or around 14203, 14250 or 18130
kHz, usually after 0000z and as late as 0800z.
KH3, JOHNSTON ATOLL
The K3J team finally made it to the Atoll after
flight delays and clearance to fly due to the tragedy in New York. Their
operation began September 14th. Operations are "expected" to end September
18th.
KH4, MIDWAY
Activity by KH4/DL7VFR and KH4/DL2RUM that was to take place
September 20-29th, is now cancelled due to circumstances and tragedy in
the USA (flights not assured, special security requirements on KH4).
LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY
Jim Buffington, K5JIM, Publicity Chairman for the Amateur Radio
Lighthouse Society, reports that plans for "Lighthouse Christmas
Lights 2001" have been announced by the Amateur Radio Lighthouse
Society (ARLHS), sponsor of the special event. "It's not a contest,
and you do NOT have to operate from a lighthouse in order to
participate," said ARLHS President and Founder, Jim Weidner, K2JXW.
"Christmas Lights" will take place from 0001z December 22, 2001,
through 2359z January 2, 2002. Any and all modes can be used. Detailed
information about the event, including suggested frequencies, can be

LX, LUXEMBOURG
A group of Dutch radio amateurs will operate as LX9SW
now through September 23rd. Activity will be on CW/SSB/RTTY on all bands,
including the WARC bands. QSL via PA1KW, bureau ok. There will be an
on-line log-search with info and links at:
MU, GUERNSEY
Hein, DL2OBF, will be active in the CQ WW CW Contest as
MU/DL2OBF. He will take part in the Single Op/All Band/Low Power category.
There will be no operations outside the contest. QSL via DL2OBF.
QSL INFO AND NEWS
Larry, W6OD, reported that the QSLs and certificates for the Andorra
"contest/anniversary" special event stations actived in March 2000 are
being received. He received his on September 9th.
Charly, K4VUD, informed OPDX that he made over 4200 contacts over this past summer with his HS0ZCW callsign in Thailand. He had time to make only two contacts with his new India callsign, VU3CHE, but he did see the Taj Mahal and attend the Dalai Lama's birthday celebration in India. QSL via buro or direct to K4VUD.

T88, PALAU ISLAND
Nobu, JA7AYE, will operate as T88AY between September
20th and September 24th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters, SSB/CW. He will
pay special attention for EU. QSL to homecall: Nobuyasu Hosaka, 98-118,
Haramae, Oogawara, 989-1201 JAPAN.
XV, VIETNAM
Remember to look for Sam, JA1EUI, staying in Danang at the
end of the week (September 21-28th). He hopes to sign XV3Z or XV3ZZ. His
activity will be on 80-6 meters SSB. QSL via JA1EUI: Satoru Matushima,
2469-5 Toda, Atugi, 243-0023, Japan.
YE, INDONESIA
Donny, YB1BOD, informs OPDX that the ORARI Lokal Bekasi
Club station, YE1ZTC, will participate in the upcomming CQWW CW Contest
and probably the Phone Contest. Last year they participate with the
callsign YC1ZTC, however, shortly after they were granted the callsign
YE1ZTC to enchance their DX operating (The Indonesian prefixes YC and
YF prefix do not have privileges on 20 meter and the WARC bands). Their
main bands for the contests will be the 15, 10 and 20 meters since they
have marginal antennas on 160, 80 and 40 meters. They request to please
lower your CW speed (25 - 30 wpm) since not all of their operators are
used to contest style QSO (however they are training them). They will
enter the contest as a Multi/Single entry. QSL cards should be either
via the Bureau, the address listed on QRZ.COM or YB1BOD (who handles the
cards for YE1ZTC).
ZL7, CHATHAM ISLANDS
Roger/G3SXW and Nigel/G3TXF are now active until
September 23rd, as ZL7/homecall. Their activity will be CW only on the
following suggested frequencies: 3503, 7003, 10103, 14023, 18073, 21023,
24893 and 28023 kHz (listening 1-3 kHz up). QSL via their home callsign,

A50A - Bhutan Amateur Radio Club Forms
October 26, 2001 marks the inaugural day for the Bhutan Amateur Radio Club (BARC).
Amateur Radio was officially allowed in the Kingdom of Bhutan in early 2000 with two DXpeditions: A52A and A52JS together making over 100,000 contacts for this most needed entity. There have been several individuals and group visits to Bhutan since.
Dr. Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, a member of the A52A DXpedtion, returned in January 2001 for medical work and also taught Bhutan's first amateur radio classes. A total of seven Bhutanese were officially licensed after passing written and Morse exams!
It is not a simple matter to form an organization or club in the Kingdom of Bhutan. The Bhutan Telecommunications Authority (BTA), also responsible for the management of radio frequency spectrum, assisted in establishing the Club.
The primary purpose of the club is to foster amateur radio interest in the young Bhutanese and also to enable the club members to be active on the air. One other purpose is to promote the understanding of radio communications.
ICOM America has donated an ICOM 756Pro for the club and it will be used as the main radio at the Bhutan Ham Centre for visiting hams.
An anonymous donor has donated seven complete stations for the BARC members to check out and use.
Mr. Bob Heil, K9EID, of Heil Sound, has donated several headsets and accessories. ICOM Japan previously donated an IC-746 during the A52A DXpedition. The A52A team and Dr. Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, have donated several antennas for the club.
