IMPORTANT NOTICE BY EDITOR:
It is with great sorrow to report the owner of "NSHORE.ORG" and administrator of the "OPDX Mailing List" has passed on. Father Steve Walick, age 57, of St. Wenceslas died late Sunday afternoon, November 4th, of complications from a stroke. Steve, who was not an amateur radio operator, was very instrumental in providing BARF80 BBS a UUCP connection to the InterNet for the last several years. He also provided a subscription of the OPDX Bulletin each week to the DXers of the world via his mail list server on "NSHORE.ORG". The sad part for me is that I met Steve for the very first time a week before his passing. This is when I picked up the new LINUX machine (Steve installed the software) for "BARF80 BBS" (ed. He was working on the new system remotely up to the time of his stroke). I will miss my good InterNet friend, especially our talks on the phone. He has done a lot for me and the OPDX.

As far as the status of "NSHORE.ORG" and "BARF80", the connection will stay in place, however, "NSHORE.ORG" will be moved. The administrator at St. Wenceslas stated that he would like to keep Steve's legacy operating and has turned over the controls of "NSHORE.ORG" to Dave Foran, WB8APD, of "HAMNET.ORG". Dave will be moving the system to a new location, so there may be a few days when "BARF80" is disconnected from the InterNet. Also, over the last several days Dave has been very helpful in getting "BARF80" back on track. Thanks to him, mail is now outgoing on the system, and I am learning more about LINUX.

4W, EAST TIMOR
Carlos, CU3FT as 4W/CU3FT, was a nice catch on 10 and 12 meters SSB this past weekend. Keep an eye on 28430 and 24940 kHz between 1200 and 1400z. QSL via CT1EEB.

9L, SIERRA LEONE
Zbyszek (Zbig), SP7BTB, is now active as 9L1BTB for the next 10 months. He is currently working there for the UN in Freetown. He was heard this past week on 40/20/17/15/12 meters SSB. QSL via SP7CDG.

9M8, EAST MALAYSIA (Also, V85)
Operators JA3AA, JA3UB, JA3AER, JA3ART, JH3GAH, JR3MVF and JA4HCK, who were recently attending the SEANET Convention in Kota Kinabul (9M6), will be active this week from Mulu National Park (First World Heritage site in Malaysia) until November 14th. Their bands/modes of activity were not mentioned. Look for the following callsigns: 9M8/JA3AA via JA3AA, 9M8/JA3UB via JA3UB, 9M8/JA3AER via JA3AER, 9M8/JA3ART via JA3ART, 9M8/JR3MVF via JR3MVF, 9M8/JA4HCK via JA4HCK and 9M8TG via JH3GAH. ADDED NOTE: Operator JH3GAH will travel to Brunei (V85) alone between November 15-17th and will be active as V85TG. His activity will be on 80-6 meters CW/SSB/RTTY/PSK31 (160m unsure). AH2, GUAM
After successful efforts during CQWW SSB Contest, the Guam Contest Club will be on the air again during CQWW CW Contest at end of this month. This time they plan to set a target as the Oceanic leader in the Multi-Single category and World Top 5. Also, they are trying to build an Oceanic record in Muliti-Single category. Look for operators JI3ERV/NH2C, JR7OMD/WI3O, JK3GAD/AL7NC, JR8VSE/NH2N and JP1JFG/N2IU to sign AH2R Guam Island (Zone 27,IOTA OC-26). Their Sunrise/Sunset is: 2024/0750z. FO & FO/M, FRENCH POLYNESIA AND MARQUESAS
JI1JKW will be operating as FO0SAI from Hiva, Marquesas (OC-027) from November 18-21st. He will then move to Moorea, French Polynesia (OC-046) to operate from November 22-23rd. Operations will be on HF and six meters. QSL via JI1JKW.

FO/A, AUSTRAL ISLANDS
Both Leo/K8PYD and Jon/WB8YJF have informed OPDX that they will be leaving on December 1st for the Australs. They expect to arrive on December 3rd, and will leave on December 14th. They should be active all days inclusive December 3-14th. They plan to operate mostly RTTY and some CW (Leo states maybe he will take a mic also if any room is available.... hi) on 80-10 meters. Jon Severt, WB8YJF, will use the callsign FO0SEV and Leo Fry, K8PYD, has the callsign FO0FRY. All cards are to be sent to the home callsigns. They hope to provide a new one for a few that still may need the Australs on RTTY.

HK0, SAN ANDRES ISLAND
Gerd, DL7VOG, will be operating from here now through November 29th using the callsign HK0GU. Activity will be on 80-6 meters, with a possibility of 160 meters. Operations will be mainly on CW and RTTY with some SSB upon request. Equipment will include a barefoot IC-706 and HF9VX vertical. QSL via DL7VOG. IOTA NEWS
SA-052. Rene/DL2JRM and Daniel/DL5SE, will be active from San Lorenzo Island, Peru, January 3-13th, hopefully as 4T4I and 4T4X respectively. If they cannot use the applied for 4T4 callsigns, they will sign homecall/p. QSL via home callsigns (4T4I via DL2JRM, 4T4X via DL5SE).

JD/O, OGASAWARA
Three stations were active this past week, one probably a pirate (JD1XX). The station signing JD1BIA was active this past weekend on 6 and 15 meters. Watch 21275 kHz (or lower) after 0530z or later for stateside starting around 2300z. JD1BKZ was also active, mainly on RTTY, on 20 meters usually after 0830z or 1030z.

JT, MONGOLIA (Attention Top Banders)
Ken, K4ZW, states final preparations are being made for the lowband operation from Mongolia. JT1CO informs him that the Titanex vertical is installed but not working. There were no instructions with the antenna and tuner, so he suspects something is not set up properly. Their first priority is getting the Titanex operational. Following that, they will work on some receive antennas. Ken has supplies for a rotatable loop and a beverage. They should be active on 80 and 160 meters early in the week of November 19th. A lot will depend on the weather. Ken will be operating as JT1/K4ZW and not JT1FZW as previously reported.

L34/L64, ARGENTINA
A gruop of LU's from the Radio Club Rosario are going on a DXpedition (longitude 64 H and latitude 34 H) November 23-26th. They will operate as L34H on HF on 80, 40, 30, 17, 12 and 6 meters on CW/SSB/ RTTY and as L64H on VHF on 2 meters and 70cm in FM. They will send a special QSL. LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY
ARLHS CHRISTMAS EVENT DRAWS NEAR (Participants To Receive Harbour Lights Miniature). Jim Buffington, K5JIM, Publicity Chairman for the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (ARLHS), reports all participants in the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society's upcoming Lighthouse Christmas Lights QSO Party (LCL 2001) will be eligible to receive a Harbour Lights miniature lighthouse collectible. This second annual edition of the popular event will take place from December 22, 2001, through January 2, 2002. Harbour Lights, an ARLHS sponsor, has donated one lighthouse miniature from their "This Little Light of Mine" series for each LCL 2001 participant. All one has to do to receive the miniature is submit a valid LCL 2001 log confirming contact with at least one lighthouse or one ARLHS member and 3 USD to cover cost of postage and handling. CHICAGO HARBOR LIGHT TO BE ACTIVATED. One of the contacts most wanted by lighthouse chasers will be available early next year. The Metro Amateur Radio Club (MAC) of Chicago will activate Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society USA #171, on February 9th and 10th, 2002. Special event station K9Y will be operated from Columbia Yacht Club, according to Mike Dinelli, N9BOR. A special QSL will be available. The usual ARLHS frequencies will be used:
SSB - 3970, 7270, 14270, 21370, 28370
CW - 3530, 7030, 14030, 21030 and 28030 kHz.

Leo, K8PYD, reports that they are still getting many, many cards at the 8th area ARRL QSL bureau for 9K2ZZ and others intended for W8CNL. He accepts QSLs for these stations but for 9K direct ONLY. Leo states he tries to return all QSLs stamped with this info but many, many continue to arrive. He hates to just pitch the cards if he can return them by letting people know how to QSL.....in this case direct only.

NOT THE QSL MANAGER. Jean, F6AJA, reports that he has received a phone call from F5JRY who is receiving many QSL requests for XU7ABN. He is NOT the QSL manager for this station.

Klaus, DL7NFK, informed OPDX that the processing of the QSL cards from their ZK1/s and ZK1/n activity is on its way, and 50% of the direct QSL cards are already sent out. Further more, they did receive the confirmation by the DXCC Desk that their activity from North Cook is approved, and the QSL cards are valid for DXCC.

SILENT KEY
Jean, F6AJA, (from LNDX) informs OPDX that Robert, FO5BI, has become a "SK" on September 28th. Many of you may have worked him on CW from Tahiti, French Polynesia. OPDX sends out our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

SPECIAL EVENT
Stuart Constable, M0CHW, Chairman, QRZ Amateur Radio Group of Sussex, states, "Following the events of September 11th amateur radio operators provided emergency communications to assist the emergency services, proving again the value of our hobby in times of need. As a tribute to those operators, and as a token of our sympathy for the victims and relatives of those involved in the disasters, the QRZ Amateur Radio Group of Sussex will be holding a special event station from 18.00hrs, Friday, November 23rd until 18.00hrs Sunday November 25th. The callsign will be GB4ISE and will be operated on VHF and HF. The purpose of the event is to enable amateurs around the world to express their support on air for the work done by our American colleagues. A copy of the log book will be presented to the ARRL as a token of our support. We would appreciate in letting your club members know about the event to give them an opportunity to participate. A special QSL card will be sent to all amateurs contacting the station. Thank you for your co-operation and we look forward to working you during the event."

SPECIAL EVENT
To commemorate Marconi's radio experiments between 1901 and 1931, look for special event station IY1SP to be active on the air until Decemebr 31st. The station was heard on 10 meters SSB on various frequencies. QSL via I1FNX, direct or via the bureau.

SPECIAL EVENT (Marconi Celebration)
In celebrating the 100th anniversary of the reception of the first transatlantic signal on Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland, the Society Of Newfoundland Radio Amateurs (SONRA) will be operating with the special callsign VO1S during the entire month of December, 2001. Special QSL cards will be designed and printed for all contacts made during the month. These cards will be sent via the bureau as of March 1, 2002. Anyone wishing to receive a card directly can do so by providing a SASE before this date to the club address:

T8, PALAU
Tosy/JA6VZB and Seiji/JH6RTO will be active from Palau as T88JA and T88FS, respectively, November 22-27th. Tosy's focus is his Single Op/Multi Band operation during the CQWW CW Contest. In contrast, Seiji will always be on 6 meters looking for the Americas and Europe. QSL via their home callsign.

VK, AUSTRALIA (80m DX Window Expanded)
The WIA approached the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) with a view of expanding the window through the creation of a sharing arrangement with present commercial users. After considerable dialog between commercial users, the WIA and the ACA, the ACA has decided to proceed with a change in the allocation of the band 3776-3800 KHz. The ACA's intention is to reallocate this band to the amateur service on a primary basis from 1 January 2004. Commercial incumbents will be moved to the existing land mobile spectrum adjacent to the new amateur band by the end of December 2003. The Australian operators presently are limited to a 4 kHz segement around 3798 kHz.

VP6/D, DUCIE ISLAND (Possible New One!)
Just a reminder that the Pitcairn Island Amateur Radio Association (PIARA) is expected to be admitted as an IARU society member on November 15th, and an operation will take place to celebrate the event on November 16th. Their IARU membership would result in the addition of Ducie island to the ARRL DXCC Entities List. The group will use a VP6 callsign to be announced at the beginning of the operation. The frequencies to be used are 21.020 MHz (CW) and 21.295 MHz (SSB), both 24 hours each day to allow more stations to find and work the group, depending upon propagation to their area. Also, 28.495 MHz, and 14.195 MHz will be the prime SSB frequencies, and 14.020 MHz will be the prime CW frequency other than 15 meters. Since Ducie is expected to be an all time new DXCC entity, and this is the very first operation, Bill, K6GNX, states the emphasis is to get Ducie into as many logs as possible all over the world. Because of that, 160 meters is not a priority. Nevertheless, the team is taking an inverted L 160 antenna and, if the weather and other factors cooperate, there may be 160 operation nearer the end. The ARRL DX Bulletin ARLD045 reports, "Ducie Island is located 360 kilometers from Henderson Island, the nearest land. It is the easternmost atoll in the Oceania, and rarely visited. Because of ecological concerns, only one group may be on the island at one time."

XW, LAOS
Hiro, JA2EZD, active as XW0X was very active the past week on 15 meters CW (around 21031 kHz between 2345-0030z). Reports indicate that he has a new 24 meter high tower and a Kenwood TL-922 amplifier at his office station in downtown Vientiane. His is expected to be active on 40/20/15/10/6 meters, with plans to be on the WARC bands soon. There are even plans for some RTTY operation (equipment donated by JA7MYQ). QSL via Hiroo Yonezuka, P.O. YI, IRAQ
Roger, G0MMI, was active from the YI1BGD club station this past weekend on 17 meters for a few hours. Watch 18145 kHz after 1400z. He was saying QSL via G0MMI.

ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS
Joe/W5ASP, John/K6AM and Carl/K9LA are each planning a Single Band effort for the CQWW CW Contest. Look for K6AM to sign ZF2AM and operate on 10 meters for the contest. W5ASP will sign ZF1A and probably will do either 15 or 20 meters. K9LA will sign ZF2LA and will do 80 meters. Additionally, look for Vicky, AE9YL/ZF2YL, to be active on SSB before, after and during the contest. QSL to their respective home callsigns.

ZL7, CHATHAM ISLAND
Hiro Miyake, JF1OCQ/W1VX, has plans to go here and be active as ZL1WY/ZL7 from November 30th through December 5th. His activity will be on 80-6 meters CW/SSB. He will especially look for North America and Europe stations on 6 meters during this time. He will operate a breakable Beacon on 50.115 MHz for DX around the clock. ZS7, ANTARCTICA
Reports indicate that the ZS7ANT SANAE Base is back on the air with a new operator named Anton, who came to Antarctica without having a ham. However, he has passed his exams (written and CW) under the supervision of the SANAE base commander and a telephone call to South Afric. Anton's new callsign is now ZS4AGA, and he will stay there until February 2002. Plans are in the works to organize a somewhat like traffic net for the WABA interested DXers. Other stations to look for from the Antarctica are: CE9NKR, CE9MFJ, EM1HO, EM1KCC, KC4/N3SIG, KC4AAA, KC4USA and VK0KMT.

The Pitcairn Island Amateur Radio Association announces that all planning is now complete for their operation from Ducie Island. PIARA expects to be admitted as an IARU society on 16 November, and this operation will celebrate that event.

The group will use a VP6 callsign to be announced at the beginning of the operation, and plans to be operational at 00:00 UTC on 16 November, assuming transportation goes smoothly.

Operating plans for the group are intended to provide contacts with as many different Amateur Radio operators as possible during our stay on the island. The band plan is as follows:

21.020 Mhz (CW) and 21.295 Mhz (SSB) will be QRV 24 hours each day. This is to allow more individuals to find and work the group, depending upon propagation to their area.

28.495 Mhz, and 14.195 Mhz will be the prime SSB frequencies, and 14.020 Mhz will be the prime CW frequency other than 15 meters.

It is planned that there will be some operation on all bands, 160 through 6 meters, and RTTY in addition to SSB and CW operations. It is expected that Low Band and WARC operations are more likely to take place in the last days of the operation, as the initial emphasis will be to allow as many operators as possible to work this rare IOTA and probable new DXCC Entity.

Antennas on 10 and 15 meters will be a 2 element HB9CV, with a 4 Square for 20 meters, and wire and vertical antennas for the other bands. There will be a 6 meter beacon on 50.110 Mhz.

Operators will be: VP6TC, VP6DB, VP6BK/JA1BK, JF1IST, JA1SLS, K9AJ, K5VT, and FO3BM.

The pilot station is Dr. Bill Avery, K6GNX, and QSL manager is Garth Hamilton, VE3HO.

While stations who dupe the operation will not be blacklisted, it is recommended that once you hear your call coming back that you not work the station again on that band and mode so that others will have an opportunity. Log checks will be available at www.big.or.jp/~ham/dx.html.

The Yaesu Division of Vertex Standard and Create Electronics are providing support for this operation. Any donations will be gratefully accepted.

QSLs should be sent to the manager with an SASE or through the Bureau. However, please do not send a second request through the bureau after QSLing direct.

The ship departed 31 Oct from Papeete to Gambier with all antennas, (2)-main radio (Ft-1000MP & FT-1000MP Mark-V), (1)-main amp (Acom 1000 include 6 meter band), (2)-Robin & (1)-Yanmar generators loaded on board. In addition, we will hand carry four FT-100D rigs.

The list of operators has not changed and we will all get together at Air Tahiti domestic counter at 08:00AM on November 13th, 2001.

Hopefully we will leave Mangareva on the evening of the 13th to go Pitcairn to pick VP6DB and VP6TC and then go directly Ducie.

We will be QRV on 21.260 /MM after leaving Mangareva so everyone can keep current on our progress but there will be no QSLs for these MM contacts of course.
