DAYTON HAMVENTION DX DINNER BANQUET AWARDS
"LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD" - Northern Ohio DX Association President Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW, presented Kan Mizoguchi, JA1BK, with this special award. NODXA Club President stated, "This award will not be issued on a yearly basis. It will only be given to those who deserve it. The award is what it says, 'Lifetime Achievement'. It will only be given to those who are recognized by the DX community and have spent much of their time organizing, advising and operating from rare and possibly new DXCC entities."

"DXPEDITION OF THE YEAR" - was awarded by the South West Ohio DX Association to the VP6DI operation. The award was accepted by the VP6DI team: JA1BK, K5VT, K9AJ and N9TK.

"DXPEDITIONER OF THE YEAR" - was awarded by the South West Ohio DX Association to Ed Giorgadze, 4L4FN, for his activity from North Korea. Ed was not present, but the award was accepted by Bernie/W3UR and Martti/OH2BH.

Albert Bergren, W0AR, was named into the "CQ DX Hall of Fame".

2002 KOREA DX CONVENTION
Lee, HL1IWD, Organizing Director for the convention, informs OPDX that the "2002 Korea DX Convention" will take place between August 31st through September 1st in Cheonan City in South Korea. The programs include DXCC field checking (with the help of K3ZO) and DXpedition video and seminars. Any foreign ham friends are welcome to join!

3XY, GUINEA
The DL7DF crew is happy to announce its next DXpedition to Guinea using the callsign 3XY7C. Operations will take place between October 30th (evening local time) and November 13th (noon local time). They will have several stations on the air on all bands from 160-6 meters on CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31. They will also make an attempt on SSTV. Their experienced crew includes Tom/DJ6TF, Dirk/DJ7UC, Manfred/DK1BT, Wolf/DL4WK, Frank/DL7UFR, Tom/DL7BO and Sigi/DL7DF. The equipment consists of 4 transceivers (2 x IC735, 2 x IC706), 2 x kW linears (maybe 3), a TH3 for 20/15/10, a A3WS (17/12), 2 Titanex V80E Lowband Verticals, a GP for 40/30, another R5 Multiband GP as well as 5 laptop computers. 9A, CROATIAN ISLANDS
Operators Neno/9A7N/p, Luka/9A7Z/p, Ante/9A4DU/p, and possibly two members of the radio club "Korcula" (9A1CLM/p), plan to visit seven Croatian islands situated on south part of the Adriatic, from June 14-16th. QSL via their home callsigns.

9H, MALTA
Maurice, ON4BAM, reports that he will spend his holidays in Malta this year and has just received an E-mail confirmation of his callsign 9H3Z. Look for him to be active from July 15-30th on all HF bands with his TS- 450S and wire antenna on SSB and PSK. This will be a holiday style operation except during the IOTA contest. QSL via ON4BAM.

9M6, EAST MALAYSIA
Peter, G4MJS, was currently active from the Hillview Gardens Resort station 9M6AAC/9M6A in Sabah, East Malaysia. Look for activity again by 9M6AAC, June 5-7th, with emphasis on the WARC bands and 50mhz. Also look for activity from Peter as 9M6A (contest call for Hillview Gardens) in the RSGB Jubilee Contest June 8-9th. By the way, Peter was active this past weekend in the CQ WPX CW Contest as 9M6A. 9U, BURUNDI
Gus, SM5DIC/9U5D, informs OPDX that his good friend and colleague, UN Chief Communication Coordinator, Christian Alemanni in Bujumbura, Burundi, now has his Ham Radio License. His callsign is 9U5A. The ARCT bureau accepted his application and gave him a full legal license. He will be sending a copy to ARRL DXCC to be confirmed. Christian has little experience on short wave operation, especially pile ups. He only has had a French low class license and only worked VHF traffic over repeaters back home. So, he is a new DXer, PLEASE, be patient with him. Christian will have a French ham fellow as QSL manager. More details should be forthcoming.

ANTARCTIC ACTIVITY
Chris Post, N3SIG, informs OPDX that he is currently back stateside. However, he will be back on Ross Island (AN-011) on August 15th and plans to be active on HF shortly after his return. He also mentions that he got approval for his Antarctic New Zealand license to be renewed, so he will have the special ZL5CP callsign again. He will also use KC4/N3SIG from McMurdo Base Station. His QSL Manager will be AI3D for both callsigns.

BQ9, PRATAS ISLAND
The Chinese Taipei Amateur Radio League (CTARL) announces its 7th DXpedition to Pratas Island. The callsign issued will be BQ9P. Operation will commence on or about 0900z on June 4th, and will end at approximately 2300z on June 12th. Operators include BV4FH/Paul (Team Leader), BV5CR/Wong, BV3FG/Robert, K4WA/Steven, K5YY/Sanford, W5FI/Gary and W0IZ/Igor. The team plans to operate 5 stations on all bands, 6 meters to 160 meters. QSL cards can be obtained via KU9C. Please Note:

DX VIDEO REVIEW (by Tedd, KB8NW)
The "VP8THU South Sandwich 2002" video is another fine addition to my James Brooks, 9V1YC, collection. As always, James's video photography is top notch, and brings this cold Antarctic island right into your living room. I would have to call this operation "EXTREME DXing". The Southern Thule Island (part of the South Sandwich Island Group) has been called by other expeditioners the "most horrible place on Earth". This video shows you the "extreme conditions and challenges" the VP8THU team went through just to air this rare entity. There is some beauty on the island as well as some historical information provided on the video. This video makes you appreciate the VP8THU's hard work as operators and devotion to DXing. C31, ANDORRA (YL Op)
Look for well known YL DXer Denise, F6HWU, to be active for three days as C31YL between May 29-31st. This expedition was possible due to both the Clipperton DX Club and URA staff's efforts. Activity will be on HF CW only from URA Radio club station, open daily from 0600z to 2000z. She may try to activate the WARC bands. The QSL cards go exclusively to URA Bureau.

HB0, LIECHTENSTEIN

IOTA NEWS
AF-NEW. Steve, OM3JW, reported that the IOTA expedition to Habbibas Island was cancelled. He states that he is frustrated and it was big disappointment for him. They spent a lot of time with preparations for this project. At the end of February, they received the licence from Algerian PTT with special callsign 7W4HI and permission to transport two transceivers to Habbibas Island. Everything was OK until Monday, May 13th. A group of operators were flying from Alger to Oran on Tuesday, May 14th, at 0800z, but on the morning at 0700z, they received a message that permission for landing on the island with equipment must be give by the Army, not the PTT. They didn't want to issue any permission. However, Ivan, OM3CGN, who flew to Alger a few days earlier to be sure that everything was OK, did receive permission to land on the island the day he departed from Algeria. Steve states, "Hrane, YT1AD, may have stated 'never more North Korea', I say 'never more Algeria'...."

AS-079. Takeshi, JI3DST, will be active from Miyako Island (Miyako-jima Hirara-city Okinawa-ken) as JI3DST/6 from June 1-3rd. Activity will be on 17/15/12/10/6/2 meters SSB (main bands 6 and 2 meters). He will be looking for AF and SA on 6m. QSL via the Bureau (BUREAU is best).

AS-118. Hamad, 9K2HN, reports that the 9K2F IOTA operation has been delayed. They are still waiting for approval to operate from the island.

EU-006. Alan, EI8EM, informs OPDX that the Limerick Radio Club trip to Inisheer Aran Islands due to be held this past weekend, May 24-26th, had to be cancelled at short notice due to the Ferry not being able to sail due to 60 mph winds and 20 ft.waves at the departing pier. The Club hopes to re-arrange this trip in a few weeks time.

EU-007. John/EI4GK and Declan/EI9HQ had planned to activate EU-007 during the past week, but heavy seas and stormy weather prevented them reaching the island. They hope to try again during the coming week. Look for them using the callsigns EJ4GK and EJ9HQ on all bands 80-10 meters SSB between May 29th and June 2nd. They may also try some 6m and PSK31.

EU-091. During the upcoming IOTA Contest, the operators of "Salento DX Team" from Lecce, will be active from Grande Island (I.I.A. LE-002) with the special call "II7GR". QSL Manager is I7YKN (ex-I0YKN) via the bureau, or direct c/o IK7JWX (www.qrz.com).

EU-101. Operators OH6NJ, OH6XX, OH6UV, OH6HJE and OH6MTG will activate Bjorkon Island as OH6AW starting June 8th. Activity will be on HF, 6m, 2m and 70cm. They will depart for EU-184 on June 12th (see below).

EU-122. Operators from the Bangor and District Amateur Radio Society will operate as GN3XRQ from Rathlin Island from May 31st through June 3rd. They expect to be active on 80-10 meters mostly SSB, with some CW.

EU-133. Dennis/RZ1AK, Vlad/UA1CIO and Tim/UA3DPB are going to be active as RK1A/p from Reymosar Island (RRA 01-17) on May 26-28th. QSL via RZ1AK either direct or through the bureau.

EU-136. Emir, 9A6AA, plans to visit several North Adriatics islands. The first of them will be the island and lighthouse of Zeca on July 26-27th. Look for him on 7070 kHz or 14260 kHz. Other reference numbers are CI-146 (IOCA), LH-1537 (WLHA) and CRO-201 (ARLHS). Emir will arrive on the island during the evening of July 26th, and plans to be active as soon as possible - at the latest early morning, (at 0300z on July 27th). Next island will be the Island of Visoki (CI-225 and CRO-189) on the evening of July 27th. Check his Web site for more info at:

SA-021. Mariano, LU4EJ, will be active from Ariadna Island, which is about 38 miles south of Bahia Blanca and in the Altantic Ocean, from October 4-6th. This will be the first time amateur radio will be activating the island. He will use the callsign LU4EJ/D. Suggested SSB frequencies are: 3680, 7080, 14260, 14200, 21260, 21300, 28460, 28560 and 50110 kHz. QSL via LU4EJ.

KH0, MARIANA ISLAND
Hiroyasu/JA4RED and Yasuo/JH4RLY will be active from Saipan as KH0/JH4RLY and KH0/JA4RED for four days between June 14-17th. Activity will be above 40 meters on SSTV, PSK31, and RTTY.

KL5, ALASKA (IOTA Op)
Lanny, W5BOS, will activate IOTA NA-121, Walrus Isls, Alaska, July 8-10th. His callsign will be W5BOS/KL5. Operation will be on 20-10 meters CW/SSB. QSL via W5BOS direct or via the bureau.

LIGHTHOUSE NEWS AND ACTIVITY
PanAmerican Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend. Activity will be on all modes and sponsored by the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society from 0001z, August 3rd through 2359z, August 4th. Suggested frequencies are:
CW -- 1830, 3530, 7030, 14030, 21030, 28030 kHz
SSB -- 1970, 3970, 7270, 14270, 21370, 28370 kHz.

Look for Finn, OZ4EL, to be active from the Danish Sletterhage Lighthouse (DEN-043) in central Jutland now through June 7th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters mostly SSB but with some CW. PY0/F, FERNANDO DE NORONHA
Dennis, K7BV, informs OPDX that reports/rumors have been circulating about him being active from Fernando de Noronha between May 24th and June 1st. This information is incorrect and Dennis has not reported or released such information. However, Dennis did operate PY0F last year on those dates.

QSL INFO AND NEWS
Operators YT1AD, YU1RL,YU7NU, 4N1FG and S56A were active this past weekend as 3V8BB in the CQ WPX Contest as a Multi/Single entry. QSL for this operation ONLY via YT1AD.

George Allen, K2CM, reports that he is receiving many QSL cards for BV2A. However, K2CM is NOT the QSL Manager for BV2A or any other station. The original K2CM was the QSL Manager but died many years ago. Please correct your databases, and it is recommended to send cards direct to BV2A.

A few members of the Southern Cross DX Group (SCDXG) were active this past weekend during the CQ WPX CW Contest. Stations active were :

OPDX has had a request to find out the QSL status on the NH4/NH6YK Midway DXpedition of August, 2001. Does someone have any up-to-date info on this or has anyone received their QSL cards?

CORRECTION. Jim, N9TK, informs OPDX that the correct route for VP6AJ, VP6VT and VP6TK (all on Henderson Island) is via N9TK CBA (NOT via K9AJ as mentioned in OPDX.562). Cards already sent to K9AJ will be answered, and there is no need to send a second to N9TK.

R1, MALYJ VYSOTSKIJ ISLAND
By the time you read this, this operation will be winding down or QRT (May 30th). The main callsign that was used was R1MVI. QSL to via OH2BR. Operators involved were: OH2BR, OH5NE, OH9MM, RW1AC, RV1AW, RA1ACJ, UA1AKC, UA1ARX, UA2FZ, RW3QC, RW4WR and RA3AUU. Three of the five Russian operators are on the WRTC-2002 team (RW1AC-RW3QC, UA2FZ-RW4WR, RV1AW-RA3AUU) and were active in this past weekend's WPX CW Contest as R1MVC, R1MVD and R1MVF. SPECIAL EVENT
Dennis, ZS4BS, informs OPDX that the Midlands Amateur Radio Club in South Africa will be operating a final station from Spioenkop (scene of one of the bloodiest battles fought to relieve Ladysmith) on May 31st. This is the last time ZS100ABW will be on the air to commemorate the roles played by the British, Boers and Zulus during the Anglo Boer War of 1899-1902. Dick, W5AA, informs OPDX that he will be active as W5AA/TI8 for one month from the remote location of Pavones, on the Pacific near the Panama border begining May 22nd or 23rd.

TN, CONGO

TY, BENIN (Update)
The French team has provided more information on their July 15th to August 14th operation to Grand-Popo, just near the southern border of Togo. Their shack will be 2 km away from the ocean. Their aim is to contact as many stations as possible from all continents, especially on WARC bands as well as low bands. 6m and SAT activities are also planned. Due to the proximity to Togo, they expect to transmit from the southern part of that country. At this time, they are looking to get a license but it is not a sure thing. In Benin, they know of several young guys who are really interested in ham-radio, but they don't have the money to pay for licences and gear. The team has asked for an extra license. Their antennas will stay there and they will provide a transceiver. They really hope to leave the country with at least 1 station (permanent resident) active from TY. Their relations with the OPT (Ministry of Telecommunications) was excellent during their operation last year. That is why they want to work hard to promote ham-radio in this country. So they are currently looking for donations. The DXpedition now has a Web page available at:

XV9, VIETNAM
You still have a fews to contact Rolf, SM5MX, in Hanoi using the callsign XV9SW through May 28th. He has no antennas for lower bands, so he will be active mainly on CW and the higher bands. Rolf was active this past weekend in the CQ WPX CW Contest as a 21 MHz Low Power entry. QSL via SM3CXS as usual.

ZONE 2 (IOTA Op)
The Castalia Island DX Association is proud to announce an upcoming DXpedition to Baffin Island Canada, VY0, IOTA NA-047, CQ Zone 2, from June 15th through June 18th. Current plans are for operations on 20, 15 and 10 meters during the evening hours from approximately 2200-0300z. Operations on the WARC bands may be attempted if time and conditions allow. Log Checking Reports For ARRL Contests Available Online

The ARRL is pleased to announce the availability of Log Checking Reports (LCRs) for selected ARRL contests. ARRL members may access the available reports at: www.arrl.org/members-only/contests/lcr.html You must be registered in the Members-Only area of the ARRL Web in order to access your reports. Additional reports may be accessed, as contest results become available. If you were a single operator, your log-in username (callsign) must be the same as that which appears on the log that you submitted. If you were a guest operator at another station or part of a multioperator entry, you may access the LCR for that entry if your callsign appears in the Cabrillo header (summary) as an operator for that log. ARRL members without Internet access may request the LCR free of charge by sending a request and a SASE to the above address.

Non-ARRL members may obtain a copy of their LCR by sending a request along with $3 and a SASE to: LCR Request, ARRL Contest Branch, 225 Main Street, Newington CT 06111. You must make a separate request for each event (Phone and CW modes of the November Sweepstakes are separate events), and include the name and year of the contest, as well as the callsign of the entry for each contest. Each report incurs a separate $3 fee.

We recognize that it is useful to participants to review the errors found in their logs, allowing them to identify areas for improvement in their performance. In order to minimize additional manpower and avoid the inequities, we have established guidelines regarding how we will address queries.

Simply put, we will not enter into discussions or debates over individual QSOs. All electronic log data is checked using custom software. All logs are judged by the same criteria. The log-checking software can and does perform a good job of impartially adjudicating the logs. Unique QSOs are not busted without substantial evidence. Audio tapes, wave files of particular QSOs, email confirmations from others, or other types of "documentation," while useful for a contester's research and learning, are not usually definitive and will not be considered. If a systemic problem is found, we will address the issue as appropriate.

There have been a few rare occurrences where log files were corrupted during transmission to the ARRL. If your report reflects an unusually large decrease in QSOs that you suspect may have resulted from a log file transmission error, we will be happy to investigate. The Cabrillo format Start-Of-Log and End-Of-Log statements are the means that we use to verify that the log arrived intact. We will deal with these problems as necessary.

LCRs will be available for selected events, commencing with the 2001 ARRL November CW Sweepstakes. Please keep in mind that the style and format for each report may differ between various contests, as the various contests are checked and processed by different software. TWO ADDITIONAL NATIONAL TEAMS + CHANGES IN THE WRTC2002 COMPETITOR ROSTER

As stated earlier, the WRTC2002 organizing committee reserved an option to add some teams to their original team selection. The committee is now pleased to welcome two new nations to compete at the WRTC2002 event, increasing the team number to 52.
These two invited teams had presented their original high quality applications by the original deadline. Adding them as two new nations will increase the represented countries to 34 including the nationalites represented by the invited referees.

The WRTC2002 organizing committee is pleased to announce the addition of the following two teams for the WRTC2002:
Team Estonia: Arvo Pihl, ES5MC + Toivo Hallikivi, ES2RR
Team Latvia: Girts Budis, YL2KL + Olegs Osrzigallo, YL3DW.

Please also note the following changes in the previously announced competitor roster:
Heinrich Langkopf, DL2OBF replaces Ulrich Weiss, DJ2YA
