4U, UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS (Possible Change/Update)
Fritz, N6UK/DL4TT,
informed OPDX that he would be active as 4U1UN on June 9th, however, some
bulletins are reporting that he will be active on the 10th. We have been
trying to contact Fritz over the weekend to confirm the change. It is
recommended to watch on both days for his activity. Remember, his band
choice will depend on shortwave conditions and the status of the roof/
antenna work going on at the moment. Mode will be mainly CW. As usual,
QSL only via Box 3873, Grand Central Station New York, NY 10163 USA.
5J0, SAN ANDRES ISLAND (Update to OPDX.606)
Eight members of the Florida
DXPedition Group will be operating from San Andres Island during the period
of October 20-28th. They will run four to five stations before and after
the CQWW SSB Contest. They have been assigned 5J0J as their contest
callsign. The group is still looking for any assistance and is asking for
donations to help offset the cost. If you are interested in donating, you
may send it via credit card through PayPal (Paypal ID: w4wx@bellsouth.net)
or mail to: Bill Gallier, FDXPG, 2694 North Camel Ave., Middleburg, FL 32068
For information on their team and activities, visit their two web pages at:
9A0, CROATIA (Special Event)
As announced last week, Pope John Paul II,
visited Croatia over the past weekend. Amateur radio stations from some
Croatian towns have activated the special callsign 9A0PAX. This callsign
will be in use from now until June 30th. QSL Manager for this station is
Kresimir Juratovic, 9A7K, P.O.Box - 88, HR-48001 Koprivnica, Croatia.
The special event station's callsign 9A0PAX is valid for the "The Pope
John Paul II in Croatia Award". The rules for this award can be found at:
9A, CROATIA (Lighthouses and Islands)
A DXpedition is being organized
by the President of CIHG and WLH checkpoint Kresimir/9A7K, WLH Manager
Phil/F5OGG and Branko/9A6BND, who are all members of Croatian IOTA Hunters
Group - 9A0LH. They will be active from many Croatian lighthouses and
islands between June 21-30th. During this activity they will use the
following callsigns: 9A7K, 9A6BND, 9A/F5OGG/p and 9A0LH. QSLs are via
their individual home callsigns; 9A0LH via 9A7K. The list of all Croatian
lighthouses and islands that they are going to activate are:

A2 & 7P8, BOTSWANA AND LESOTHO (African Double Jump DXpedition - Update)
Fabrizio, IN3ZNR, reports that they have lost a member of their team.
Mauro, IN3QBR, will not be joining the team on this DXpedition (no reason
given). He reports everything is ready for this African effort. Operators
are: Joe/AA4NN, Aldo/IK2ANI and Fabrizio/IN3ZNR. Activity will take place
between June 28th- July 13th. In June, they will be traveling to South
Africa, so it is possible for some operations using ZS/home calls. The
operation in Botswana will take place starting on July 2nd through the 6th.
The operation in Lesotho will take place starting on July 7th through 11th.
The plan is to run both CW and SSB with two stations on the air. In spite
of the summer season, the CW guys will make a great effort on 80 and 160
meters. The Phone operators will be monitoring 50.110 MHz for checking
the 6 meter band. They will also pay attention to the frequencies of USA
General Class band plan, 10-15-20 meters. The callsigns are already
assigned:
HB0, LIECHTENSTEIN
Members from the Hungarian Pannon DX Club and the
P.V.R.Klub Puspokladany will operate from here again this year. The
operation will take place between June 22-27th from a rented house at
Masescha 1350m ASL. Activity is planned for the HF bands (40-10 meters,
including the WARC bands) CW/SSB and RTTY. There will be 3 stations active

EU-023. Andrea, IK1PMR, who was recently active as TX4PG from Marquesas Island, should be active from Gozo Island June 12-19th. This will mainly be a vacation trip for him this time, not a full DXpedition like his TX4PG operation. His callsign is not known yet (probably something like 9H3**). He will operate on 80-10 meters with 100w, vertical antenna + 40m dipole + wires, mainly on CW with some SSB and RTTY/PSK. QSL via IK1PMR (Bureau or direct using the address on QRZ.com).

NA-066. Members of the Escondido (CA) ARS hopes to mount a mini- expedition to Santa Catalina Island for the IOTA contest. Hopefully, more details will be forthcoming.
NA-067. Randy, KD8JN, informs OPDX that he will be active from Hatteras Island (USI NC-005S), North Carolina, from July 19-26th using the callsign KD8JN/4. Activity will be on all bands, primarily on SSB. Suggested frequencies will be the usual IOTA frequencies +/- QRM. Randy states, "This again, is a Vacation/DXpedition, which includes the family. I will be on the air as much as possible, and as propagation and the wife permits! NOTICE!!!! 'IF' the fish are biting, I'll be using my fishing rod more than the radio!! Please be patient. I pay close attention for QRP stations, Kids, and YL's/XYL's. I REALLY listen for the weak signals too! I try to get everyone in the log that wants to be there!" Direct QSLs to KD8JN: Randall Phelps, 1226 Delverne Ave SW, Canton, Ohio 44710-1306 USA. QSLs 100% via the Bureau also! SWL's welcome too!
NA-125. Nenad, VE3EXY, informs OPDX that he is too busy to travel to
Zone 2 at this time. So, he has decided to visit Orleans Island
(Zone 4) for a weekend operation. He will sign CK2/VE3EXY/P
from June 13th (Fri. about 2200z) to June 15th (Sun. 2000z).

His suggested frequencies: IOTA or RTTY frequencies. No low
bands. Nenad objectives are:

During ANARTS Contest - 20, 15 and 10 meters
Around Greyline times he will be either on 20 or 30 meters.
His resting periods are: 0400-0830z and 1600-1800z subject
to change if CONDX are good. Nenad requests/states, "I'll have
no access to the cluster. Please post me as much as possible."
NA-NEW and NA-007 (possibly NA-009 and NA-047). Mike/K9AJ and Jim/K9PPY will activate Somerset Island (a new IOTA, in the Nunavut region of Northern Canada) from July 13-20th. They may have two stations on the air, depending on conditions. As there will be no sunset (less than 500 miles north of Arctic Circle), they plan no activity below 40 meters on this trip. Their callsigns will be K9AJ/VY0 and K9PPY/VY0. Susan, K9XYL/VY0, might also be active. After their Somerset Island operation, K9AJ/VY0 will be active from Southampton Island (NA-007) from July 22-24th. It is also possible that some activity might occur from Cornwallis Island (NA-009) and/or Baffin Island (NA-047) during the time period July 11-26th, so pay attention to the QTH info given by the operator. The usual IOTA frequencies will be used on CW and SSB. QSL to operator's home callsign.
LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY
Jim/W5AZN (ARLHS #484) and Patty/W5AZO (ARLHS #485) will be activating
several lighthouses on Lake Superior signing with the special callsign,
N8L, between July 16-30th. Activity will mostly be on 20 meters SSB.
Frequencies and operating times will vary from different lighthouses
each day. QSL direct to W5AZN, #10 SASE PSE.
Operators Albert/RV3GW, Vlad/RA3GD, Valery/RW3GU and possibly others are planning to visit some lighthouses and islands in the Onega Lake June 12-15th. Their goal is to activate the following three new LHs for the WLHA and RLHA (RRA) programs: LH 0530 - Vasilisin, LH 0441 - Sosnovo-Shal'skiy and LH 0407 - Mihaylovets. Their callsigns will be RV3GW/1, RA3GD/1, RW3GU/1 and possibly others. Their activity will be limited to 20 and 40 meters CW/SSB and one day (about 5 hours from morning of a local time) per island. The possible activity will depend on the weather.
QSL INFO AND NEWS
FRENCH POSTAL INCREASE. Gil, F5NOD, informs OPDX that there has been a
new postage increase for mailing from France to abroad:
(Reference 1 USD = 0.8 Euro)
F to West Europe (DL, OE, ON, OZ, EA, OH, G, SV, EI, TF, I, HB0, LX, LA, PA, CT, HV, SM and HB9) = 0.5 Euro (0.625 USD)
F to Europe (other than listed) and AFRICA = 0.75 Euro (0.93 USD)
F to OC, AS, NA, SA = 0.9 Euro (1.125 USD)
(Remark: 1 USD will not cover any more postage expense to OC, AS, NA, SA)
Jean-Michel, F6AJA, informs OPDX that the Les Nouvelles DX historical QSL gallery Web site continues to grow. This site contains, more than 1400 QSLs in five different galleries. The Web page is at:
To celebrate, Pope John Paul II visit to the City of Rijeka, his 100th pastoral visit outside Vatican, and his third trip to the Republic of Croatia, members of radio club "Rika" activated the special callsign, 9A100IP. "IP" means John Paul in Croatian language. QSL via 9A1RKA: Radioclub "Rika", P.O.Box 262, HR-51000 Rijeka, CROATIA.
Toni, EA5RM, reports that the S05X QSLs have arrived on June 6th from the printer, so confirmations will start Monday, June 9th.
XQ6ET QSL UPDATE. George, W8UVZ (QSL Manager for XQ6ET), reports that cards for XQ6ET have begun to flow as a large batch goes into Monday's (June 9th) mail from Battle Creek. Verification process is slow with Bob's handwritten logs - as the process takes place over the air when propagation cooperates. Also, Bob reports he has many cards that are ready for QSLing, but he had no blank cards. These (QSLs) are being sent to him this week, so the deserving should QRX sending duplicate requests until mid July as their cards may be in the works! One final reminder for those seeking QSLs. Older style IRCs (smaller size) are not redeemable in George's area. He has gotten several QSL requests, particularly from JA and UA with these older IRCs. Those requesting QSLs should use the newer style CN01 (large size with bar coding on rear) IRCs, US Dollars in their envelopes or US postage on their return envelopes.
T32, EASTERN KIRIBATI
Members of the Western Wireless CC will be active
from here between November 23rd and December 7th and participate in the
CQ World Wide DX CW Contest (November 29-30th) as a Multi/2 entry. Operators

Paul/NO0T and Tim/N0ZM. All T32 callsigns have not been received yet. They
will be active on 160-10 meters including the WARC bands. Modes will be
CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK-31. QSLs will be via operators' home callsigns.
T33, BANABA ISLAND (Looking for SUPPORT!)
In OPDX.611, an announcement
was made that an international team of about 15 well known operators were
going to activate Banaba Island for a period of about 12 days in March
or April of 2004. Because of the long ocean voyage and the lack of
facilities on this devastated island, this will be an expensive undertaking.
Each member will be contributing to travel expenses. However, even with
this, they will fall far short of their needs. They hope organizations will
be able to provide some help. Any amount is appreciated, and they will put
your club logo on their QSL card, and it will be included in the credits for
the video and articles for all significant donantions. For more information
please visit their web site at:
V2, ANTIGUA
Kevin, WB8XX, will be on holiday from here June 10-16th. He

meters with a focus on the lower and the WARC bands, including operations
on AO-40. They will have 3 stations on. QSL via DL2RMC.
XW, LAOS
Son, HS6NDK (XW1N), informs OPDX that Champ, E21EIC, will
continue to be active as XW1IC until the morning of June 27th. He has
been active on 6 meters (on 50.110 and 50.115 MHz around 1000-1700z).
He will mainly be pointing to Japan, Asia stations and sometime to Europe.
He was heard this past week/weekend on 17 meters RTTY (18104 kHz around
1330z) and 20 meters CW/SSB (between 1530-2030z or later). QSL via E21EIC.
YA, AFGHANISTAN (Update)
Masa, JG1OWV, has informed OPDX that Sada has
joined Hiro/JA1CQT (YA1CQ) and the group on June 5th. He was invited to
use their club station, YA1JA, on 6th. Sada will temporarily go to U.A.E.
where he will pick up his FT-857 that Masa has sent him. Sada will be
back to Kabul around June 12th with the equipment. Masa states, thet we
can expect Hiro's operation to continue for a few more days until he leaves
for the southern area next week.
YB35, INDONESIA (Attention Prefix Hunters)
To celebrate the 35th
anniversary of ORARI (ORganisasi Amatir Radio Indonesia), 1968-2003,
the special prefix callsign YB35AR will be on the air from Jakarta City,
July 6-13th by a lot of YB0 call area operators. Activity will be on
all HF bands including WARC Bands, VHF 6m and AO-40 Satelite. Modes are:
CW, SSB, RTTY, SSTV and PSK31. QSL via YB Bureau, or P.O. BOX 8000,
Jakarta 11000 Indonesia. On July 11th, 12th and 13th, the ORARI in the
Jakarta area will organize Jakarta HAMfest. YB35AR will be on 40 and 80
meters for local HAM, if everthing is running well. On July 12-13th,
look for YE0HQ (ORARI HQ Station) to participate in the IARU World
Radio Championship 2003.
ZK1, SOUTH COOK ISLANDS
Dave/W6AQ and Don/K6IPV are going on the road
again. Don states, "This time, we'll stay away from the CW, which neither
of us has a great familiarity with, and will travel to the South Cook
Islands for the CQ WW SSB Contest the end of October." Don also states,
"Licenses have been applied for and a decision is about to be made as to
just which delightful place we will stay, but we know it will be next
door to Victor, ZK1CG/ZK1USA, who has been a tremendous help in coordinating
our trip and promises to help whenever he can. We believe that help will
probably be in the form of constructive criticism and the supply of tools
and duct tape when necessary. We plan to arrive on Rarotonga the evening,
local time, of October 20th and will be leaving on October 29th. We
anticipate antennas for all HF bands, 160 through 10 meters, and will
attempt to get in a little bit of CW along with a lot of SSB. We understand
that South Cooks is the most wanted country, in Europe, on RTTY, so, Don
will be attempting to patch together some gear to be able to operate the
other digital modes while Dave will be checking out the local dining and
wine establishments. We have our wives along, this time, so will not,
obviously, 'have at least one transmitter on the air 24 hours a day'.
We'll do as much as we can." QSL Manager is to be named later and callsigns
will be announced as soon as granted.

To Whom it may concern,
Both Karen vk2hkw and myself attended the Funeral of Doug VK4BP
husband of June VK4SJ.
The Funeral was held at Caloundra on the Sunshine coast in Queensland, to day at 11:00am EST.
The service was very well attended by all including the Amateur Radio Fraternity.
The Majority of the attendance were Amateurs that travelled quite long distances to attend and from the Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club.
The service went very well and an Auto-biography of Doug's life and interests were read out along with his passion for Amateur Radio.
June VK4SJ, has asked me to pass on thanks, to everyone concerned about her in this time of Mourning.
June and her family, handled the ceremony well under the circumstances.
June also requested that you hold back on emails for the time being as you no doubt understand, please feel free to send them to me as June asked if I could hold any emails for her until she is up to responding to them.
I did pass on the messages received so far but will hold the emails until June is ready.
June also has started getting QSL cards from the Cook Island DXpedition so will be tied up with them as well, so please be Patient.
