3B9, RODRIGUES ISLAND
Guy, FR5ZL, is a new operator on the island as 3B9ZL. He will be there for about the next three weeks. His activity has been on 15 and 20 meters CW/SSB. Watch around 21022 and 21275 kHz after 1100z and around 14017 and 14190 kHz 0230z. QSL via FR5ZL. Meanwhile, Robert, 3B9FR, (ed. NOW a NODXA member!) continues to be active on 20 meters CW around 14024-25 kHz usually after 0300z and sometimes after 1100z.

CY9, ST. PAUL ISLAND
CY9A is now active until August 2nd. Please refer to OPDX.619 for the suggested operating frequencies (+/- 5 kHz). QSL via N5VL.

    FP, ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON
    By the time you read this, look for Paul, FP/K9OT, and Peg, FP/KB9LIE (YL), to be active from Miquelon (NA-032). They will be on the air from now through August 5th. Activity will be on CW/SSB on 160-6 meters (emphasis on 40, 30, 17, and 12 meters). On 6 meters they will have a breakable beacon around 50.120 MHz. They will run 100 watts to a variety of antennas: wire, inverted-L, and 6 meter beam w/Armstrong rotor. Paul and Peg will be looking for station who are QRP, mobile, and VK/ZL/JA/JT/Oceania in particular. FP/K9OT will participate in the CW NA QSO Party. QSL via their home callsign, bureau or direct.     IOTA NEWS
    AS-147. Takeshi "TAKE", JI3DST, was active this past weekend as JI3DST/8 in the IOTA Contest from Okushiri Island (Okushiri-cho Okushiri-gun Hokkaidou) and will continue to be active until 0000z, August 3rd. Activity will be on 40/17/15/12/10/6 meters SSB. QSL via the Bureau ONLY.

    EU-004. Steve, DJ7AO, has activated Mallorca Island instead of Fehmarn Island (EU-128) this past weekend for the IOTA Contest. He will be active until August 4th as EA6/DJ7AO. He will also activate some lighthouses. Activity will be mainly 20 meters CW/SSB. For more details on past and present lighthouse activations, please visit the Web site at: http://e09.de

    EU-170. Milan, 9A5DJ (OK1DJG), and Lada, 9A5LO (OK1LO), will activate the Island of Pasman (CI-085) until August 8th. Activity will be on HF, 6 and 2 meters, mainly CW. Maybe they will activate some other Croatian islands around Pasman Island.

    OC-133. Members of the Kinabalu Amateur Radio Transmitting Society (operators 9M6KM and 9M6KTC) will be active August 16-17th from Tiga Islands. The name, TIGA ISLAND (Malaysia name PULAU TIGA) is about 40 miles from Cotakinapal, Borneo Island, Saba State. Look for activity on 15 and 20 meters. QSL via the address on QRZ.com.

    JX, JAN MAYEN (Update to OPDX.617)
    Ove, LA2IJ, informs OPDX that he is sorry to report his JX2IJ operation is delayed. Flights to JX-land on Thursday were cancelled due to thick fog, and Friday was not better. The next possibility is Wednesday (July 30th) if weather permits. He will possibly follow that flight. Length of his stay is not known - max 6 days.

    KH9, WAKE ISLAND
    By the time you read this, Jake, N6XIV/KH9, should once again be active from Wake Island beginning on or about July 26th (if all goes as planned). His visit will run approximately four weeks, and this will be his last KH9 work assignment for 2003. Jake will operate whenever possible during his very limited spare time. Just a reminder, he operates SSB only. QSLs go via K2FF direct or bureau. LAST MINUTE UPDATE (before going to print): Glenn, K2FF, informs OPDX that "Jake came up at 0830z on July 27th on 7.254 using a home-brew 40m vertical and had a nice QSO with K2FF and W6FRH. He reports that the C3SS tribander has some element damage and he's trying to get some parts shipped to Wake in a week or two. If this does not work out then he will continue to use the 40m vertical and a long wire for other bands. Operating times will be as usual with a start time around 0730z and lasting for a few hours. Again he hopes to be on the island for four to six weeks and this will be his last KH9 trip for 2003."

    INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE/SHIP WEEKEND 2003
    Mike, GM4SUC, reminds everyone that there are only three weeks to go before the International Lighthouse/ Ship Weekend takes place (starts at 0001z Saturday, August 16th and ends 2359z Sunday, August 17th). There are just over 250 stations in 34 countries confirming their participation in the event. The list of these stations can be found at:

    OHIO QSO PARTY
    It's less than one month away for the 2003 Ohio QSO Party (OQP). The OQP runs from 1600z Saturday, August 23rd, to 0400z August 24th. Full details, including rules, planned operations, past scores, records, software, operating aids, awards, etc., are available at the OQP website at:

    POSTAL RATES INCREASED (VE and CX). The cost of DXing is going up again. It was announced that postal rates will go up in Canada and Uruguay. Hal, K4HB, provides the following info:
    For Canada: Effective January 12, 2004, Canada will increase its rates as follows:

  • Canada to Canada will increase from .48 to .49
  • Canada to the US will increase from .65 to .80
  • Canada to all other countries will increase from 1.25 to 1.40

    As of July 25, 2003, 1 USD = 1.38 CAD. Unless the USD picks up on the foreign exchange between now and January 2004, 1 USD will be a little short for sufficient postage from Canada to countries other than the US.

    For Uruguay: This country increased its rates on July 1, 2003. Postage to the US and other countries went from 24 pesos to 36 pesos. (Don't know about the rate to other SA countries) The present exchange rate is 1USD = 27 Pesos, so 1USD is not enough for return postage anymore.

    RSGB IOTA Contest (Late listings)

    QSL 90CI via HA3KNA. Activity was from Island of Sveti Nikola (EU-110 and CI-118). Operators were: HA1AG, HA3OV, HA3NU, HA6OI, HA1TX and 9A6AA.

    QSL OH0Y via OH6YF. Activity was from Aland Island (EU-002). Operator was Harry, OH6YF, celebrating 20 years (1983-2003) of HAM radio.

    QSL F/ON5MF/P via ON5MF, direct or by the bureau is OK. Activity was from Ile Sainte-Marguerite (EU-058). Operators were: ON5MF and ON6NN.

    Tony, TK5XN, active in the IOTA Contest, was from Corsica (EU-014, DIFM TK-01). QSL via Paul, F2YT.

    QSL VY2TT via K6LA. Activity was from Prince Edward Island (NA-029). Operator was Ken, K6LA.

    QSL K9AJ/VY0 via home callsign. Operator Mike was active from Southampton Island (NA-007). ADDED NOTE: Jim/K9PPY/VY0 and Mike/K9AJ/VY0 made over 5,000 QSOs from NA-225. Mike, K9AJ, was not able to be active from NA-009.

    QSL YW6P (IOTA Contest) via EA7JX. QSL YV5JBI/P (outside contest) via YV5JBI. Activity was from Piritu Afuera Island.

    SPECIAL EVENT
    Look for special event station EN3WLL now through August 3rd from Lviv, Ukraine, to commemorate the Polish scientist Ignacy Lukasiewicz (who was the first-ever to use a kerosene lamp for the first time during the medical operation on July 31, 1853, in Lviv).     SPECIAL EVENT
    Operators Jack/G0FQN, Mark/G1PIE/M3PIE, and Pam/2E1HQY will be active next Saturday, August 2nd, as GB2SCL from Ribblehead Station on the Settle and Carlisle Line. This activity will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the withdrawal of the steam train by the British Railways. ADDED NOTE: A steam train will be driven through the station while the team is operating.

    SPECIAL EVENT
    John Hughes/G4KGT and G4PSG, Station Manager, Prestwood Scout Group Amateur Radio Club, informs OPDX that the RSGB Mobile Demonstration Vehicle, GB4FUN, will be present at WINGS2003, August 2-9th, at Windsor Great Park, Berkshire, England. There will be world-wide representation by over 3000 Guides and Scouts. The Amateur Radio Station callsign GB4FUN will be active from 1400 BST Sunday, August 3rd, with daily sessions thereafter 0930 to 1230 and 1400 to 1700, for demonstration purposes and for greetings messages to be passed (subject to existing bi-lateral agreements). Please listen around the usual Scout SSB frequencies. It is hoped that further activity will take place outside the session times.

    SPECIAL EVENT
    Look for special event station GB90RSGB to be on the air from RSGB HQ in Potters Bar now through August 9th, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Society. Activity will mainly be on the HF bands, CW and SSB, but with some digital modes and VHF operations. Also, you may have heard over the past weekend some stations signing GB90RSGB/number (ex. GB90RSGB/32). These station were also celebrating the RSGB anniversary and were involved in what was called "Party in the Park". The numbers at the end of GB90RSGB represents the RSGB district number the station was in. Some 58 stations were expected to be on. A special 90th anniversary award is available for those making contact with or monitoring any GB90RSGB stations. Details can be found at:

    TI5, COSTA RICA
    Operators Harry/AC8G, Ron/WA8LOW, W8ILC/Ron, Brian/KA7KUZ, Kecko/TI5KD, Tony/VE3RZ, Jorge/CX6VM, Ed/K1EP, Tom/ZP5AZL, Juan/ZP5MAL, Dale/N3BNA and Dave/WT8R, will be manning the TI5N Contest station as a Multi-Multi entry in the CQWW SSB Contest, October 25-26th. QSL TI5N via W3HNK. For a day or two before and after the contest, the individual operators will be on using TI5/own-callsign as time permits. Expect a higher level of CW and other non SSB modes on the contest bands due to the large SSB volume in the contest. Attention will also be directed to 6 meters and the WARC bands using various modes. QSLs for the individual QSOs should go to the callbook address unless advised otherwise.

    IMPORTANT: Do not mix the contest QSL with ones for the individual contacts.

    TS7, TUNISIA (Large IOTA Op)
    About 17 OMs and 3 XYLs will operate from Kerkennah Islands (IOTA AF-073) from November 19th to December 1st. Their activity will include the CQ World Wide DX CW Contest (November 29-30th) as a Multi-2 entry using the callsign TS7N. During their time there, they plan to have five active stations on all modes and on 160-6 meters. Operators mentioned are: 9K2RR, JH4RHF, DK1BT, DJ9CB, DJ7IK, DK7YY, DL3KDV, DF2SS and possibly more.     USI ACTIVITY
    Look for NODXA member Byron, KF8UN, to be active from Tappan Lake Island (USI OH-New) between August 9-10th. Activity will be on all bands 80-6 meters. QSL via the address on QRZ.com.

    VP9, BERMUDA
    Mark, AA1AC, will operate as AA1AC/VP9 from the Hamilton Parish, Bermuda, during August 10-13th. No other details were provided. QSL via home call.

    W9DXCC 2003
    The Northern Illinois DX Association is pleased to announce the 51th annual W9DXCC convention at Rolling Meadows (a NW suburb of Chicago) Illinois on September 19-20th. This will be the 50th anniversary of the first W9DXCC initiated by Bob Baird, W9NN, and held in Chicago in 1953. Their banquet speaker will be Dave Sumner, K1ZZ, ARRL CEO. Dave's topic will be the recently completed World Radio Conference 2003 from the DX'ers perspective. Dave is also Secretary of the International Amateur Radio Union, and has been instrumental in acquiring new frequencies for amateurs, as well as protecting current allocations.     XU, CAMBODIA
    Hugo, LA5YJ (ex-9N7YJ), informs OPDX that he will be active as XU7ACW at least until September 9th. He was heard this past week on 40/30/20/17 meters CW. Watch 7006, 10105 and 18075 kHz after 1330z, and 14030 kHz after 1830z. QSL to LA5YJ with a SAE and please 1 IRC (If not available, 2 USD or equivalent). Postage from LA is 1.50 USD.

    ZB2, GIBRALTAR
    Carl, GW0VSW, will be one of four Sea Cadet Instructors training in Gibraltar between August 15-29th. He will operate mainly QRP (Some QRO operation may be possible) using an FT-817 and dipoles on all bands CW/SSB as ZB2/GW0VSW/p. However, Sea Cadet/Naval training must take priority, so expected times of operation will be early morning and late evening around 0500z and 2100z. Suggested frequencies are: 7030, 7055, 10106, 14060 and 14255 kHz. QSL is OK via his homecall.
