"Andy Blank, N2NT, Named Director of CQ World Wide 160-Meter Contest -- Veteran contester Andy Blank, N2NT, of Dayton, New Jersey, has been named Director of the CQ World Wide 160-Meter Contest. Andy succeeds Dave Thompson, K4JRB, who has decided to retire after 16 years at the helm of the event. During Dave's tenure, the number of logs submitted more than tripled.CQ NEWS (2008 DX Marathon Update)Andy has been a ham since 1972, a 160-meter operator nearly as long, and a contester for more than 30 years. He has operated not only from his own station but from various multi-op stations in the U.S. and the Caribbean. He is a past winner of the CQWW DX Contest, the ARRL DX Contest and others, and has been a three-time competitor in the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) competition. Andy says the CQ WW 160-Meter Contest is among his favorites.
Andy's plans for the contest are to build on K4JRB's record of success and growth by making the log-checking procedures consistent with those used in other CQ contests, creating a web presence for the contest and updating some of the rules. The 2009 rules will appear in the November 2008 issue of 'CQ' magazine."

EU-189. (OPERATORS NEEDED!) With less than 2% of the IOTA participants claiming to have contacted the Isle of Rockall, now a dream of opportunity has arisen to join the "Island Man" (aka Andy Strangeway) on a once in a lifetime trip to the edge of the world. Previously activated in 2005 for a few hours only, it's easy to see why this most wanted island on the air attracts interest from every part of the globe. On June 22nd, Andy will attempt to travel out to Rockall with a professional team of yachtsmen and rock climbing instructors. It's thought generally the weather and sea conditions are kindest then. There will be room onboard for up to eight radio amateurs who may be interested in going to Rockall and activating this extremely rare IOTA. If you are serious in joining Andy, drop an E-mail to him at: info@island-man.co.uk
ADDED NOTE: Andy along with the "World's Most Travelled Person" - Charles Veley, will also attempt to land on Rockall during the week commencing May 12th. It was reported that there are one or two places still available on this earlier trip to Rockall. Again, if interested, contact Andy - the May visit to Rockall could be an ideal opportunity to do a site survey for the planned June 2008 (amateur radio) visit. A35RK UPDATED ON LOTW. Paul, A35RK, informs OPDX that he has uploaded his March log to the LoTW (on April 1st). He states, "There were nearly 4,000 contacts altogether, mostly due to the two contests... ARRL-DX-SSB and WPX-SSB...during March. I also had a couple of good runs on both 17M and 10M." Paul finds it interesting to note that the "confirmation rate" on LoTW is still running at about 30+%. Contesters like LoTW! The DXer's (in general), their "confirmation rate" is about 10-12% via LoTW, and about the same rate via Bob/W7TSQ (his QSL Manager). Paul feels this has taken some of the workload off his outstanding QSL Manager. He also wants to remind everyone: "No direct mail QSLs to Tonga, please...the mail service is terrible. Also, there is no A3 bureau. And...please...NO QSLs via KK6H, my U.S. 'home' call. Please QSL A35RK via W7TSQ (c/o W7 bureau is OK, but returns are slow) or via ARRL Logbook of the World is an excellent choice. I regularly submit my logs for the past month on the first day of the new month...both to W7TSQ and to LoTW...(ie, March log goes out on 1st April)."
Rene, F5LGE, who was active FM/F5LGE, is now home and direct requests should be answered in about two months. QSLs were ordered.
M5BXB AND OK8XB (New QSL Route). Phil, G3SWH (AD5YS), informs that following the sad passing of Graham, M5AAV, he has been appointed as QSL Manager for M5BXB and OK8XB effective immediately. The logs for both callsigns are fully searchable on his Web site at:

on the island on March 31st. As reported last week, do not expect him to
be on the air as ZS8T for about three to four weeks. This is due to a
changeover time in working patterns and general settling in on the island.
He is expected to be on Marion for at least a year. For updates and the
first offical announcement of ZS8T being on the air, please visit the
official ZS8T Web site at:
