5X, UGANDA
Nick, G3RWF, will once again be active as 5X1NH. He will be in Fort Portal in western Uganda starting March 11th for about two months. Nick informs OPDX that he bought a (U.S.) vertical for 40 and 80 meters, so he feels that he will do a bit better on those bands this time. However, he will not have a 160 meter antenna (states, "there is simply not enough room for an antenna, unless I visit my friend 5X1GS and use his antennas - which I might well do."). He also mentions,
"I prefer CW but I have now worked over 20k CW QSOs, so I have it in mind to work some data (RTTY and PSK31). Will work SSB whenever signals are good enough."
Nick informs that one of the problems in 5X is unreliable power (it is difficult to promise that there will be power at any particular time). He plans to buy or rent a car battery this trip because he will not have a vehicle to tap into. Since he is doing voluntary work there, look for Nick on the air mainly during the early mornings, evenings and weekends. QSL via G3RWF.

9K48, KUWAIT (Special Event)
Members of the Kuwait Aamateur Radio Society will activate the special callsign 9K48NLD from their K2RA Headquarters
[PLEASE NOTE: Not from IOTA AS-118 as initially planned.] between February 25-26th. Activity is to celebrate Kuwait's National Independence and Liberation Day. Look for them to be on 40 and 20 meters using CW and SSB. QSL via 9K2RA. Visit their Web page at:

IOTA NEWS

http://freespace.virgin.net/douglas.maxwell/MM3T/mm3t.htm

OC-164. John, VK6HZ, will once again be visiting Rottnest Island this year. Dates of operation will be March 3-9th. Operation will be holiday style (he states "in between beer, swimming and, of course, quality time with my family!) Equipment will be IC-7000 running 100w into a Buddipole, running all modes. QSL via VK6NE. Online log will be available after the trip at:

http://www.vk6hz.com
All logs will be uploaded on LoTW.

KH6, HAWAII
Bill, AC0W, will be operating KH6/AC0W during the ARRL International DX Phone Contest (March 7-8th) from OC-019. Activity will be on 80-10 meters. There is a possibility of some operations a few days before and after the contest, as time allows. QSL LoTW and AC0W.

KP5, DESECHEO ISLAND DXPEDITION (News/Update)
* The K5D DXpedition to Desecho Island is now on the air until February 26th. Activity will be on 160-6 meters using 6-8 stations on CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via N2OO.

* UPDATE February 14, 2009 (2330z): "Because of higher-than-expected winds which delayed helicopter trips, we were unable to complete our full setup on Thursday. At this writing, those problems are behind us and the camp and all antennas are in place and working.

The QSO count is just under 10,000 in the first 24 hours with only two stations operable for most of that time. We now have five stations on the air hoping for two or three more tomorrow. We have no internet connectivity as our satellite link and our 900 MHz terrestrial link both failed. We have a plan that should get them both working in a day or two. In the meantime, no logs have been uploaded and, of course, no photos. When the links are working you'll learn about it here.

The Team is in high spirits and the weather is good now, nice breeze, calm seas but hotter than expected.

Last night we were forced to move our 40M operation away from our planned frequency. This was because of the RTTY contest which wiped out most of the band for us below 7.1MHz. The contest ends tomorrow and we expect much better 40M performance especially to Europe. We're sensitive to the fact that some EU countries/amateurs cannot transmit above 7.1MHz; this problem will self-resolve when the RTTY contest ends late tomorrow." (KP5 Web page)

* ACTIVITY ON THE BIRDS. Thanks to the support of AMSAT-NA, the team is equipped with a Kenwood D7 HT and Arrow antenna, as well as training on using the FM satellites. Satellite operation is not expected to begin until the second half of the DXpedition, and then only on an as available basis. A second repeater on AO-51 (145.88/435.150) will be activated on February 16th and reserved -only- for contacts with K5D while within sight of the island. K5D may be active on either AO-51 repeater, SO-50 or the ISS voice repeater modes if available. Users attempting contact with K5D should be aware the the DXpedition does not wish to exchange grid squares during the QSO in order to allow more operators the chance for a QSO. Their grid square is FK68, same as most of Puerto Rico. Please be courteous and limit yourself to one QSO.[ * ONE LESS OPERATOR. OPDX was informed that Brad Farrell, K4RT, did not make the trip due to a family illness.[ * Remember, for updates visit the KP5 Web page at: http://www.kp5.us
