5X, UGANDA
Jack, NP2OR, is active as 5X7JD from Masaka. Reports indicate
that he will stay there until May. He can be found daily on 40 or 20 meters
SSB between 0500-1550z. He is using a IC-718 transciever w/100 watts into
a Hy-Gain multiband vertical. QSLs only direct via Jack Dunigan, Box 100,
Masaka, Uganda.
5W, SAMOA
Operators Bill/N7OU and Bob/W7YAQ are now active as 5W0OU and
5W0YA, respectively, from Apia until February 16th. This is the first
part of their operation before being active from Tokelau (ZK3) between
February 17th and March 10th (See OPDX.940). Operations will be on 60-10
meters but mainly on CW, with some SSB and RTTY, using 100 watts and
vertical antennas. If you miss them on this trip, you will have another
chance after their ZK3 operation between March 11-15th. QSL via their
home callsigns.
5Z, KENYA
Cato, LA9PF, is now active as 5Z4/LA9PF until May. Look for
him to be active mainly on SSB and the Digital modes. QSL only direct
to: Cato B. De Savigny, POB 5642 Malindi, 80200 Malindi, Kenya.
6V, SENEGAL
Giovanni, I5JHW, is active as 6V7V from La Somone until
February 23rd. Activity is holiday style (However, he was in the CQ WPX
RTTY Contest this past weekend), and most of his operations have been
on 20 meters SSB. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the Bureau.
7O, YEMEN (Interesting Item of the Week [Don't Get Excited]!)
It seems
well known DXers Hrane/YT1AD, and Dmitry/RA9USU are currently travelling
through Sana’a, Yemen. No details were provided on why, but you can
track their Toyota Land Cruiser using the established CityPoint system.
On the map it shows 7O/RA9USU traveling throughout Yemen. To view their
travels, visit the Web page:
** LAST MINUTE UPDATE: The DxCoffee Web page is reporting the following from Hrane, YT1AD (not edited):"... We was 7 days in Yemen. After conversation in Ministry for telecommunication, with Director for FREQ and regulations, person, ex student in Russia, speak Russian and understand amateur radio, final answer is: NOT license for 7O. In last 20 years not any valid license is issued by Yemen Government and Ministry for telecommunication. King Husein from Jordan visited Yemen, but answer for HE King Husein was : NOT. Main reason is security!"
** EDITOR'S COMMENTS: OPDX has heard the above statement once before
about amateur radio not being allow for 20 years in Yemen. Most
recently in 2005 by Vladimir, UA4WHX. However, this can not be totally
true because there have been operations that have taken place and
have been accepted for DXCC. Two major operations stand out:
7O1AA - By 9K2DR and 9K2EC in late May and early June of 1990
7O8AA - By F2VX and F6EXV in late July and early August 1990
Also active and accepted was activity by the German group as 7O1YGF
in mid-April of 2000 and OH2YY as 7O/OH2YY in early May of 2002. It
is obvious that the above operations talked to/received the approval
by the right individual in the Yemen Government with the proper
authorization to issue a license and allow these operators to operate
in "7O". Otherwise, the DXCC Desk would not have accepted these "7O"
operations.
8P, BARBADOS
Yuri, VE3DZ, will be active as 8P9AA between February
15-23rd. Activity will be on all HF bands using CW, SSB and RTTY. His
activity will also include the ARRL International DX CW Contest (February
2021st) using the callsign 8P3A as a Single-Op/All-Band entry. QSL
via his home callsign.
9H, MALTA (IOTA Op)
Operators Olaf/DL4HG and Holger/DL5XAT will be
active as 9H3TX during the ARRL DX CW Contest (February 20-21st) as a
Multi-2 entry. QSL via LoTW or via DL5XAT, by the Bureau or direct.
Operators will be there between February 17-24th. QTH is Gozo Island

watts into vertical antennas.
9X, RWANDA

and 9X0LX, respectively, in Kigali until February 18th. Rudy informs OPDX
that they are running only wire antennas. Georg is concentrating on the

Using a special event call sign, GB6GEO, will establish contact with other radio stations around Britain, Europe and around the world from a base set up outside the entrance to Kents Cavern, Devon’s internationally famous Stone Age cave and gateway to the English Riviera Global Geopark.
There are now 53 Geoparks around the world, but this special radio event is being coordinated from Kent's Cavern. Visitors will be able to link up with several other Geoparks by radio over the weekend, including Araripe Geopark in Brazil; Kanawinka Geopark in Australia; Langkawi Geopark in Malaysia; the Petrified Forest of Lesvos Geopark in Greece, the Brecon Beacons in Wales, Nature Park Terra Vita, Germany, Hateg Country Dinosaur Geopark Romania, Naturtejo Geopark Portugal, and to the Copper Coast Geopark in Southern Ireland.
Many Geoparks also have show caves, and those participating so far include: Smoo Cave in the North West Highlands Geopark in Scotland, Marble Arch Caves Geopark in Northern Ireland and Unicorn Cave in the Harz Mountains in Germany. With the event now global, the event will run from 0900z on Saturday, May 22nd, through the night to 1600z on Sunday, May 23rd.
GEOPARK CERTIFICATE: For amateur radio stations/SWL's around the world who contact/hear Geopark stations, the English Riviera Geopark is offering a special beautiful commemorative European Geoparks Network radio amateur certificate for contacts with GB6GEO (instant qualifier), or two Geopark stations excluding GB6GEO. (this award will also apply to SWL's on a heard basis). This certificate is endorsed by the Queen's husband H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh, with his own words congratulating the holder. Certificates will cost in the UK 2.50 GBP each, in Europe 4 Euros and Rest of the world 5 USDs.
Alternatively certificate holders to be the first in their country to claim the certificate will have an 'FC' suffix following the certificate number. This denotes the first person in their country to claim the 'Geoparks' award. These certificate holders will be worth one point towards the basic certificate that requires two points, or work any five (5) certificate holders. Many of these certificate holders can be found in the Torbay Amateur Radio Society nets and/or details from the Web site at:

can make it through the noise. Robert adds that he knows there are hundreds
calling. He states (edited),
"Unfortunately, I have a TX antenna on the RX too, so I am more or less deaf! Putting up a terminated RX loop on February 24th, after I return back from my holidays, I hope will improve the RX. From RX point, from this QTH is a nightmare - S9+10 noise 24/7! Basically, after I apply all the bells and whistles - NB, ATT, NR and fiddling around with the AGC - you need a solid S7 signal to make it through (which is a challenge to say the least) on the path between ST and US. Problem with RX antennas is space. While I have a rather big setup (10 element log periodic 14-28 MHz, full size rotary dipole 30/40m and 80/160m Inverted Vee at 28 meters) there is no space for beverages. I will, however, put up the loop...... I have all the stuff, just need a couple of hours to put it up. I will do it before the weekend February 27-28th (CQ 160m SSB Contest)."T32, EASTERN KIRIBATI (New IOTAs To Be Activated)
V2, ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
Alan, N3AD, will be active during the ARRL DX SSB
Contest (March 6-7th) as a Single-Op/High-Power entry. Both QSL route
and callsign have not yet been announced.
V3, BELIZE
Luise, DL2MLU, is now active as V31MU from Consejo Shores
until March 2nd. Activity will be on all HF bands but mainly RTTY. He
is using a Kenwood TS-850 w/100 watts into 30m vertical for 80m or a

for the log to be uploaded to LoTW sometime after his activity.
VK9X, CHRISTMAS ISLAND
Just a reminder that Phil/G3SWH and Jim/G3RTE
will be active as VK9X/G6AY from Christmas Island between February 20-27th.
Christmas Island counts as OC-002 for IOTA purposes. The 2009 "Most Wanted"
survey by the DX Magazine shows Christmas Island at #68 worldwide for
DXCC purposes. Their activity will be on CW only on all bands 80-10
meters. There will be no 160 meters activity. Propagation permitting,
they plan to have two stations on the air for as many hours every day
as is possible. Their main objective is to work as many European, North
American and RoTW stations on as many bands as possible. QSL via G3SWH,
either direct with SAE and adequate return postage (recommended), via
Phil's Web site for a Bureau reply or by the Bureau. There will be an
online log that will be updated daily at:

now and the end of March. Their callsign will be XR9JA. Activity will be
on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB, PSK31 and the AO-51 Satellite. Suggested

of their CW operator). They request to: "Be patient with us! Will try
to do our best and certainly we will have enough time." QSL via CE5JA.

XU7, CAMBODIA
Look for Peter, NO2R, to be active as XU7ACY from Sihanouk
Ville during the ARRL DX CW Contest (February 20-21st) as a Single-Op/
Lower-Power entry. Peters states that he will be on all bands if he gets
the C3 up in time. QSL via W2EN.
YI, IRAQ (Update/Need Ops!)
A group of operators called the "YI9PSE
DXpedition team" are planning to operate from Kurdistan and be active
between April 3-11th. The team will receive a ten day visa issued by
the Government of Kurdistan. A band/mode survey is available on their
Web site at:
YW0, AVES ISLAND
On the YW0A Web page, it was announced this week that
the DXpedition team was invited by the Venezuelan Navy to go to the island
between February 17th and March 26th. However, not all of the team members
were able to take this time off. They are preparing/planning for the next
"operational relief at the beginning of next April". For updates, watch:
ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS
Jeff, K0UU, will be active as ZF2MN/ZF8 from Little
Cayman Island (NA-016) between February 2128th. Activity will be on
40-10 meters using CW only. QSL via his home callsign direct.
ZS8M, MARION ISLAND (Update)
Last week we mentioned that activity will
take place from the #3 "Most Wanted DXCC Entity" (per the 2009 The DX
Magazine survey) in April. Pierre, ZS1HF, will activate Marion Island
(AF-021) as ZS8M at the end of April. He will be working on the island
for one year as a radio/electronics technician once the supply ship
"SA Agulha" returns to Cape Town. Pierre announced on February 7th, that
he will be (trying) to take an amp. However, he states, "I have weight
restrictions of 100kg for the whole year, which includes all my clothing
and equipment." He also mentions that his antennas will only be dipoles
due to severe winds and prevention of death to the birds. Updates will be
forthcoming beginning in March when he does his training, and he will be
creating a Web site with more info. Stay tuned!
